Avoid the Coromandel Loop on 17 March

There's some sort of motorsport event on Sat 17th March which will see the stretch of the Loop from Coromandel Town, over the hill as far as the Whangapoua turnoff closed for a fair percentage of the day. Traffic will be redirected over the unsealed 309 road whilst it's taking place. The 309 is ok on road tyres as long as you take it easy and it's dry. It'll be all the idiot cagers and campervans which will present the greatest threat

Might pay to avoid the upper part of the Loop on that day!

Surprising that the council would allow the road to be closed completely considering the alternative route can be quite limiting/challenging for some...

Don't get me started about the Thames and Coromandel District Council When we wanted to replace the deck on our house, they were a nightmare to deal with. In fairness, the building inspector was great but the number of times I had to supply the same info to different groups within the council and subsequent visits to our place by an army of different flunkies who charged me each time... sigh........ took forever. I could quote all manner of other groups around the Peninsula who are outraged by Council high-handedness so closing off a public road is pretty minor by comparison. I haven't seen it gazetted in the local papers although the warnings have been up for a few weeks.

So could we sneak through and have a race? It's a closed road after all

Spend the day at Hampton Downs watching the Nationals instead ?

Should be a fun day, especially for the family as they are making an effort to provide more attractions than just the racing.

    Hi

Thanks for the heads up as me and a few of my work mates are planning to do the loop though to Whangamata that weekend. The site states the road will be closed from 3pm - 6pm what are your thoughts, would it still be ok early on in the day?

Sounds like a normal decision from TCDC.... wont provide enough camp areas, fine $200 for freedom camping....wont provide enough parking at boat ramps, fine for parking on the road.
Close down the main road for a car race on a Saturday afternoon...
