Anybody able to give me some info or links on how I can check & calibrate the oil pump on my watercooled KDX 250? It works, but the fact the bike has been stood for many a year has me more than a little paranoid about how well.

Would it be an idea to scrap it and run pre mix? I'm sure someone will know the how to on here.

Easy enough to block it off & run pre mix but time & again I read it is much better for the bike to use the pump. It gets what it needs when it needs it. My concern with pre mix is do I go a bit rich for caning it or a bit less for pootling. 40 : 1 or 32 : 1? Opens up another can of worms. Not only that, the pump may lubricate other bits of the motor. I know nothing about these bikes & am struggling to find much technical info on the interweb.
Yea, I cant say too much, as i rooted my jet ski a bit by disconnecting the oil pump and running premix, only to find it too used the oil to lube itself, resulting in the pump siezing, shearing off the little shaft and then proceeded to cruise around the stator/flywheel. Was messy and expensive.

Go and ask on kdxrider.net.
The gurus there live and breathe kdx's, the older the better.
Oil injection has the advantage that when you run out of gas in the middle of nowhere you can blag some straight petrol from the local farmer.
Many people slag off oil injection which works just fine in zillions of road bikes everywhere. These old world closed minded people cannot accept the risk that the oil pump mechanism will continue to meter oil reliably into your precious engine.
When I discovered (just in time) that my oil level of my old DT200 was not going down I became one of these people.
We meet on Tuesday nights.
Meh, can premix a small amount in the tank & run it into a small container. If it continues to flow then it will be working. Jap street models will have oil pump. All other KDX are premix.
If you did swap over you'd have to consider that it leans out the gas mixture, but it's probably rich as heck anyway.
Me I'd check if the pump has one line into the intake & if there is only the one I'd pull the pump & block it off, then do a plug chop to see it isn't too lean, could compare jetting with premix model but likely they have a smaller carb on road model.

Don't you look at my accountant.
He's the only one I've got.
It's currently running like a Swiss watch on 40:1 pre mix. Starts first or second kick & after a couple of minutes warm up just sits & idles merrily away. I've only used half a tank getting it running properly, set the float level, #38 pilot jet. It's a bit savage at the top end & I prefer tighter riding so 32:1 is probably overkill. The pump is working but I guess I'm just a bit anal about the mix. Their only appears to be the one line going into the inlet.
I guess pre-mix it is & make sure their is spare gas ready to go.
Right, just got to find the time to ride the bloody thing.![]()
Oh, I found out it's a KDX 250 SR, like this one.....http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/moto...-443854345.htm but not as pretty.
yeah the older 200s were made in SR as well, had smaller carb & a few other odds & sods aas well as some chassis changes like a grab rail which mine never had/ different subframe.
