When I got taken off a few weeks ago, the crash broke my phone that was in my pocket.

So possible the app shouldn't be used as a 100% fail safe?

If in doubt, always tell people where you are heading before you make the trip! Even worth texting someone every stop or few to say where you are up to (in case you go missing along the way).

Similar but less autonomous application for Android is 'where's my droid?' which allows you to set a pass-phrase that, when triggered, will text back your fine GPS location. Ostensibly for finding your phone if you lose it, but my partner has the pass-phrase so she can send it if I don't come back from a ride. Not incredibly accurate, but gives a fairly close area.

Yup great app that one. Keeps the missus happy when im riding back roads. Also leaving her the route helps too.

I don't put my phone in my pocket. Despite a near death experience, nothing in the tail-pack on the rear seat was damaged. Camera was fine, phone was fine, keys weren't lost. I haven't put things in my pocket since falling off a DT100 30 years ago with a screwdriver in my pocket. That hurt.

I sent them an email asking about an iPhone version and suggesting adding a panic button (potentially widening their audience to skiers, trampers, boaties, etc), and received this reply:

I wish we could publish the Apple version but I'm afraid Apple has restrictions against "emergency" apps. Their developer guide says they won't allow them. There's also a problem with iOS running applications in the background. It works for music but it won't work for apps like CRADAR. Too bad because we're getting lots of emails from iPhone users who would like to try CRADAR.

The "panic" button is a great idea. A gentleman in the States is using the CRADAR engine in an application called My Mobile Hero 24-7. Instead of texts being sent to an emergency contact, he has the application tied to an emergency call center which guarantees there is someone who will respond immediately . He asked for "Police", "Medical", and "Panic" buttons (which we added). It's a nice application and he only charges $30 USD a month for the service.

I'm really excited about all of the attention CRADAR has received lately and I sincerely appreciate your email. If Apple ever allows us to publish CRADAR in their store, I will be sure to let you know.

That reply implies they are very serious about what they are doing, excellent. All the best to them. The Apple hegemony is as consistent as ever.
