Car/bike value ratio; or where do your priorities lie?

A friend was laughing at me the other day, and while that in itself is far from unusual, the cause of her humour made me think.

She commented that I had one bike that cost me $14,000 and another that cost me $2000 that didn't even go, and that I had a stereo system that cost me over $10,000, yet I driver around in a car that cost me $560.00 that smells (gym gear), it has dents on every panel and has been washed once in the 4 years i have owned, and never vacuumed. And I am incredibly proud of that car and reckon it's the best car I have ever owned. She can't for the life of her understand my priorities when I could sell my bikes and stereo, and buy a lovely Toyota with enough money left over for a nice, cheap bike.

I remember about 15 years ago I met Fred Ferrentino of FFM helmets fame in a business setting, and he turned up to a meeting where over $1m was being discussed on a Moto Guzzi Le Mans. Fred had 3 vehicles: His Guzzi for fine days, a GSX750 for wet days and an old Holden ute when he had to carry shit. I have another mate with nearly $60k of bikes in his shed and a $2000 4WD.

Funny how your priorities change when you own bikes.
Don't blame me, I voted Green.

hmmm, two heavily custom bikes worth about 4-5k and 2-3k (but 5x that to me) a 2k dirtbike, and a (slightly custom) van worth about 1500. So not a huge value difference there, my difference is the money spent on said vehicles.

Van is lucky to see over 300 in a year now (and 180 of that is insurance), including wof (sometimes), rego (get fucked), oil (actually it has been running on motul 5800 that has gone through the bike first) etc, but excluding petrol.
Bikes probly get a bit over 2k.

And looking at those figures, I reckon I'm spending too much on the van

Thats the part that goes under the radar for most.
More spent buying bikes than cars and more spent fettling the bike beyond what you could hope to ever get back (am I doing it wrong?).

I reckon you only show the loss when the bike is sold, so don't sell!

Yeah...I am fussy at both ends of the scale...I enjoy fine bikes AND fine cars, although at present my only bike is a half built CBR400rr track toy (Value ...maybe $2k) and my only car is my dirty old 1996 Toyota Prado (value $15k). Sold up GSXR and Audi S4 to raise some capital for a business venture I am currently working on, all going well should be adding a 2010/2011 R1 to the garage in January and an Audi RS4 mid next year. I don't really care about having flash clothes, fine dining, flash gadgets (other than for business purposes), I don't drink or smoke. My only 3 real weaknesses are nice bikes, nice cars and guns. I will happily spend money on any of these three.

    Cars, bikes and guns...

Your garage sounds like and interesting space.

I had to make a decision. Bike or car. I can't afford to maintain both. I sold the cage and kept the bike.

I'm a bit like Brett, above. I like quality in both forms of vehicle.

I love the gixxer for the fact that it's better technology by far than any other bike I have ever owned.

I also own a Subaru 3.0 litre 6 cylinder wagon. This is for lugging stuff around the countryside and also for travelling long distances with herself (herself won't get on any bike that I am in control of...probably wise on her part).

Sub. is nice to drive with about 160kw available as well. Not as much fun as the bike but nice anyway.

About 80:1 or more for me, but if you include motorcycle related paraphernalia

Having said that, the wife is bugging me still to get her a light blue XR6. I'm considering relenting so long as it's a ute (cause it'll be useful for bike stuff hahahahaah).

Next time she laughs at you, tell her that at least you don't have an RGV250 that owes you over $20k like somebody else you know

having a work car means I can spend shitloads on the bike. No personal car means no fuel bill, no insurance, no WOF, no Rego, no repairs & no devaluation

I'm still a student living at home. (which is actually a good thing) I dont have to pay any living costs so 95% of my few $$$ goes to the bike.

    Car? whats that again?
