Round the mountain.
W(h)anganui ... and back.(Highway 4 both ways)
Round the lake. (Even highway one isn't that bad for a bike)
That should keep you busy for a few hours ...

For OFF road stuff ... The tracks into the forest around Lake Otamangakau are good.

42nd traverse![]()
'Good things come to those who wait'
Bollocks, get of your arse and go get it
Ride out of Raurimu to the junction with SH4. Ride across SH4 to the road, or any other road nearby, on the opposite side of SH4. Keep going.
Failing that, What they all said and make sure you include the 42nd Traverse.
I have GPS tracklogs of a few of them I can email if that's your thing.

Middle Road, Erua Road, Cluffs Road, Ruatiti, Paparoa Road, shall I go on?![]()
I'm looking at checking out some more of these Central Plateau backroads in October, the dirtier the better.
Yes I've done 42 Traverse, Fishers track, Wanganui River Rd, Ruatiti domain, and some Erua forest tracks but have some questions if anyone is any wiser on this area.
Is it possible to ride either Maungaroa track from Ruatiti Rd to Kauturoa, or Maungapurua tracks from Waipapa Valley Rd to Te Mata Rd ( I think this is the Bridge to Nowhere track).
They appear to be either walk tracks of narrow routes on GPS topomaps, but they link nicely to make a good detour off the highway from Raetihi to National Park/Owhango.
Real banjo country I'd say, and don't want to go upsetting the locals by riding dedicated walk/mtb trails.
Aww Jesus, I should have used my Google-fu first.
Appears it is a multi use track including hunters etc with quad bikes

Hey Eddie, any idea on the source of this info?
All of the info I can find from DOC and mtb websites say it is accessable by quad bike, so I suspect a 2 wheel moto would be ok.
However, I see there is a few swingbridge crossings, which may inhibit access on a moto. It appears quads can use track up to the Bartrum's swingbridge, and after that, it's about 8km to the Bridge to Nowhere. On foot or mtb.... yeah, nah.
Anyhoo, the bit I really want to ride is Kaiwhakauka track to Whakahoro, which appears all go.
Might have to phone DOC in Ohakune or Nat Park to get clarification.
TBH honest anecdotal, it's one of those things that 'everybody knows'. I've spoken to a few people over the years though that have attempted or requested access and been denied, though their aim was usually all the way to the bridge so that may have been why.
Let us know what they say
