Talking average riders, average conditions, they have done the tests already, ABS vs non-ABS. Even used racers as the riders as well. What you're saying, re ABS not braking at certain points is correct, however, the tests have shown ABS wins in almost all tests, except for very good conditions. You MAY differ, but you'd be the exception, not the norm.
The GS Adventure comes equipped with linked braking and ABS, I like having them. I've never used them for panic stops, I've had both ends of the ABS activated (normally on gravel), but the rear does activate reasonably easily when unloading it and then braking. Linked braking was very handy when I came off snapping off the front brake lever and I rode the bike back to Auckland from Oamaru with only the rear brake pedal.
As pritch said, it looks like ABS is going to become mandatory and non-switchable (I can turn it off on the BMW if I wish). Once it's mandatory somewhere, we'll end up with it as part of global manufacturing... I don't agree with having it permanently on... but they think we're safer for it...
