I read this post this morning before leaving home, but didn't have time to reply. So I checked my moving average over various sections of the trip. I rode at 105 kmh where I could unless held up by traffic, towns or road works. The section from home to Omarama over the Lindis Pass (no straight roads there) had a moving average of 95.2 km/h. Through to Rakaia moving average was 96.1 km/h with a mix of straight and winding roads. Rakaia to Templeton, all straight roads, gave a moving average of 85.3 km/h.
So based on this I now do understand your comment. Its only on the long straight roads with lots of traffic that I can keep a moving average below 90 km/h. On the winding roads it is likely to be much higher.
Time to ride
I'll sort Jmemonic in a couple of min, I'm in Christchurch now, with a rest day tomorrow in prep for the TT... Got copies of everything handy dandy on the laptop.
SmokeU and others seem to have no clue. It is not a race. There are no prizes for 1st, 2nd and so on. It's entirely personal, and a reminder that there is still the 2000km course over 2 days. If you achieve a level, you can buy a trophy - yes, it's extra and you pay for it. Like the Grand Challenge, Capital Cruise, Chatto Creek etc, 1000km a day is actually not hard. Perhaps for someone that does 200km a day, 50km a stretch, with a long stop in between legs, yes, absolutely, and I tell them not to bother.
For some of us, we can do upwards of 400km in a stretch, and enjoy it. I don't go to rallies and get all boozed up, my enjoyment comes from riding. Maintaining 100kph in good weather on good roads is actually very easy - if you know how to ride (and I'm not crossing the centre line, taking risks etc). If it gets tighter, yes, the speed drops, but on rolling roads like the South Island passes you could sit above 100kph no problem (but you wouldn't, coz it's speeding).
It's like a cop going onto a mining site and trying to tell everyone what is and isn't dangerous. You'd be laughed off the site. Now, some of us will probably do the Buller Gorge at some point. Please mr officer stay off the fucken road, so you don't U-turn in front of me.
edit: Additionally, only an idiot would think you'd do all 150 checkpoints in a weekend!

Can someone tell me when and where the start is (if it hasn't already happened). Bit hard to see with the TT2000 website down. Could come by and see you off.

I have just found out that they have removed the word gullible from the dictionary
I find it bizarre that the police, well, a police officer has made such a big & public deal about the TT2000. I have no idea how many riders will be doing it but I bet it is hundreds if not thousands less than the number of riders who turned up for Paeroa, baked in the sun all day watching the racing, topping up the adrenalin, then going home on mass at 4pm buzzing & knackered. I saw 3 maybe 4 officers in town on shanks pony, 2 unmarked cars & 1 patrol car. Oh, and 2 officers on bikes enjoying the racing & doing very tight turns. Hardly heavy handed or judgemental.
....it's fairly concerning when she (policewoman) said that 'all bikes would be pulled and checked, whether they are involved in the TT2000 or not'....would they follow all Chinese people and stop them, just in case they were involved in a Triad, all europeans just in case they were Russian and could be involved in a russo-mafia style organisation, all middle eastern people in case they were involved in a terrorist organisation...they would be shot to pieces in nano seconds, by the laws of this land...if this isn't some kind of wank way of the police hassling motorcyclists and spreading disinformation to non motorcycling Joe Public, I dont know what is...
...I shudder to think what would happen if they followed our cuzzies about the place, just in case....
its bullshit how they use the death of a rider as ammunition against the event, when no one to this day knows what caused it,its just unfortunate the accident happened while they were participating in the event.being a close relative to both riders involved,i know one would be looking down spewing that his death was being used as ammo to stop any motorcycle event fullstop
