Nothing raced but the clock. Each with a plan and time to keep to. Things change ... and so do the plans.
As with ALL long distance events such as this ... from the thousand km days up ... if an efficient pace isn't set, if both bike AND rider is not prepared, a they are not riding with some degree of intelligence and self control. They're dead.
If from the start ... they are not familar with their limits ... by at least half way into their plan ... they WILL be.
Thes rides are not just climbing on a bike and riding. With only the need to top up with gas when needed.
The bravest riders pull out when it gets too tough. The skilled finish and come back next year.
Idiots do finish ... but most DNF ... through lack of time, or just THEIR time.
When life throws you a curve ... Lean into it ...
Good in theory, but do you really think it will work in practice? It's nothing but a poorly disguised race. I have been known to exceed speed limits on the odd occasion so I'm not trying to be the fun police, but I'm just telling it like it is.
There is no need for it to be a race at all. I also organise the annual Chatto Creek 1000, which like the Grand Challenge is 1000 miles or 1609 km in 24 hours. When setting the route I always pre-ride it to check for unuasual hazards, and I ride it at the legal speed limit. That is as close to 100 km/h as possible, and always within the range of 90 - 109 km/h except where road conditions or lower speed limits dictate otherwise. If it takes me more than 20 hours at the legal speed limit then I deem the route too difficult and choose an easier one. I am also more than willing to submit my GPS tracks to the police for verification that the route can be done successfully within the speed limit and time available. I always keep these tracks untill after the completion of each event, just in case there is an incident and proof is required.
So travelling these distances in the available time at legal speeds is possible.
I will add that I find it both more difficult and more dangerous to ride for such long periods of time concentrating on the speedo rather than the road. I am always more comfortable and safer when I can focus more on the road.
Time to ride
