    Talking Thursday Ride South

Anyone else heading south on the Thursday before the Dusty.

I am crossing over on the evening ferry on Wednesday and staying the night in Blenheim.

Thursday plan is .... Taylors pass Rd - Mt Altimarloch - Molesworth to Hamner - Hamner to Private station into Lees Valley then out to Oxford - then if time allows - Waimakariri river bed and onto Methven for the night.

Keen to join up with any others heading south.

Friday morning meet up with the Mattsdakar Ride at Blackford Road.
Here for a good time, not necessarily a long time

Looks like I will meet you in Fairly..unless the car breaks down

Pretty tempted to ride up from Christchurch on Thursday to meet you half way somewhere as a shake down ride..I'll keep you in mind

The oil tank from a chain saw fuel/oil can set up is just the right size - 2 litres - and it is designed as a fuel can so safe and no leaks, just requires a couple of minutes of careful cutting with a hacksaw blade and 2 tanks for the price of one!!!

That's the one I've got too.

Used a grinder to remove the flashing from the cutting.

    Hello,

I have bit the bullet and entered the DBK1K! Any help with extra fuel tanks, preparation, advice, etc for my DRZ 400 would be much appreciated

    Cheers

Speaking of preparation, when checking on my tyre order the other day it was mentioned that time is running out... may be a bit sketchy already.
I have had a set of Mitas on order for about 4 weeks already, my chosen front is in the country, my chosen rear is on the water, it's getting to be too late to get orders in to be on the last shipment due before DB1k so if you don't already have your name on what you want you may have to just take what's left instead.
Same applied to a couple of other brand tyres I asked about at other places recently too.
Of course stuff I'm not interested in seems to be readily available.

You'll need to carry about 5L extra to be safe and easiest is to do what we did at the Mackley and put it in the tank once you've done about 100km.

There's only a few legs that'd need >150km fuel, so you'd only have to fill it up for them. Or just be safe...

I had a DRZ. Google "case savers" for engine case protection but time might be a bit short to get a set. Simple mod to do on the gear lever. File off the sharp inside corner which might punch through the cases if the lever gets bent inwards. Bar guards are great for saving your levers. With the Safari tank you have excellent side protection for the radiator. I assume you have a decent bash plate? The standard one is a bit light and narrow.
