I was wondering if there was a local community group like volunteer fire brigade/school that could do bit of a bbq with slads & beers as a fundraiser? obviously there are probs with those arriving late however if they had a close off at say 9.30 for cooking or left it so those arriving late could cook themselves a few snarlers.
Just throwing theings aroiund here. i know I was pretty buggered at the end of last years & just really wanted to hit the sack.

As it is getting alarmingly closer I want to hear your guys thoughts on the koha for Ryan. I'm happy to collect it as my gambling addiction is just about under control now.

The was a great response from the regulars here that appreciate the hard yards Ryan does for the pleasure of being able to ride with us.

The nominal amount most paid last year was $40. You have to agree that is fricking cheap for a well organised event. (apart from the weather - Ryan get your arse into gear & fix that this year)
Some that have done safaris or in a comfortable financial position donated larger amounts over $100 which was very generous of them.

I am proposing an amount of $60 per rider for the event. That is $30 a day - less than $3 an hour of riding time/ one tank full per day/ 3 flat whites & scones/ bank fees for one month/ half a handjob - you get the picture.

What do you guys think of this? I was also going to do the collecting on the Friday evening at the pub briefing for ease of payment as everyone can bring cash with them from their original destination & not have to worry about internet banking/ ATM machines etc. Also there may be a few tagalongs that may not be part of the KB community who may need a headsup to bring some cash before departing.

Of course this is a KOHA so if you are in the young kids/ big mortgage/ low cashflow scenario & running on the smell of an oily rag please don't feel compelled to donate or let this cost be the financial straw on your camels back - we are all here to escape reality for a few days, ride motorbikes & enjoy the company of other smelly scruffy maniacs.

Get back to me with your thoughts. You can pm me if you don't feel comfortable going public

Think the biggest distance last year between garages was Lawerance to Omarama at 290km.
Have a look at the fuel stop chart .pdf from last year to get an idea of fuel stop options and distance between.... click here to view

Lots of people ride there, some trailer, I've done it both ways. Some guys riding to the start from or through Christchurch do an extra ADV ride from Christchurch on the Friday on the way there.
Good thing about the actual DB1k is since it finishes where it starts you can trailer there no worries and the Pub has so far been happy to have stuff left there while we are riding, they are usually booked out for the Friday and some people stay again Sunday.
I'm not sure what I'll do this time, it is really really nice to drive home after it's over but if I van down I will not be able to do the Friday adventure as well.

    Thumbs up "far & away"

Accommodation is all booked Friday and Sunday in Fairly Top Ten. So beers etc Sunday night is a must. More than happy to donate/Koha etc

Where might you " far and aways "from the north be staying Thursday night? Im driving my ute to Christchurch airport and leaving it there. Bit of Lower South tour with family after the weekend planned.

I've been trying to think of an easier way to do this and have hit upon the idea of a rider being able to nominate any donation amount when registering. Saves you from having to wrestle with your inner demons

Thats a great idea, if a Koha column can be added on the registration page, that would be great, all payments can be concluded on registration.

Our crew of 6 also spending Sun Night at Fairlie Top 10 (as well as Fri Night Prior) so a catchup, no matter where, will occur. As for Thursday night, we at the Riccarton Holiday Park, arriving there after spending the week prior doing a tour back country from Picton.

Sounds good Ryan. I will put plan B into action & send out emails to those on the DB list for investment in a great little scheme I'm involved with with the cousin of the rightful exiled king of Nigeria.
