Awesome....that's less weight to hump down from the North. Was worried they'd call them levers a weapon on the Ferry but I'm safe now.

Have decided to run with the Tractionator H/T for the Dusty Butt - think the Heavy Terrain Tractionator will be perfect for rocky Central Otago - designed for such enviroment - good grip and around half the price of Mitas etc. Couple of guys used them last year with good results.

5 enquires to online retailers - 3 never replied ..... 1 who I had purchased tyres off previously couldn't be bothered contacting the supplier to see if he could source me a 110/18

The retailer that came up trumps was the original sponsor of this site - Mathew at Mr Motorcycles,
really impressed with his service - the extra distance he goes. If anyone else is interested in the tractionators or other brands they carry, if your required size is not listed on the site just contact Mathew and he will source them for you .....

Being a first time DB'er and without measuring the route and doing all the hard work myself, what is the rough breakdown of road surface as a %, seal, unseal, 4x4 etc?

Don't you want it to be a surprise.
Guarantee you'll spend a lot more time off the seal than on it and more again if you are choosing the challenge options.
It's going to be all down to opinion as to when a gravel road becomes classified as 4x4 stuff.

    It starts off something like this.... 800m seal.... 17km gravel/grass... 2.9km seal.... 25km gravel/dirt....
In that lot there is already 3 bits boarder line 4x4 stuff certainly not dooable in my 2wd Van and possibly wet feet.
There are longer sealed sections later as well as longer unsealed bits.
    Getting enough of the picture?

Get the idea, just after a ball park picture, definitely more off than on road.

    Cheers

For earlier routes I knew all this detail but looking at my files I can't find those numbers for the current route. Last time I calced all this was for the 2010 route and it was 800kms of 1000km that was off seal (don't have 4wd vs seal). The current route will be much the same if not more off seal and more 4wd if you do the challenge loops). Biggest bits of seal that spring to mind are Waimate to Waihao Forks, Tarras to Bannockburn, Clyde to Alex, Alex to Roxburgh, Beamount to Lawrence, and Omarama to Otematata. Alex to Roxburgh is probably the biggest and it is 40km. Couple of other very minor bits of seal i.e. less than 10km.

yes but you cut them in to strips after printing before taping.

The trick here is to know that they know where they are going. Following any random fella may have unintended consequences!

BRP I think you have your answer. Best method is to print double sided and get two lengths of chart on one A4.

Oh go on, all good adventure rides start with an evening of cutting, sellotaping and drinking... followed by rewinding your entire route because you rolled it up backwards

The road to hell is paved...
