Jesus TA what the fuck are you on?
Up here all the forests are closed due to extreme fire risk. There was a fire the other night out the back of us caused by the lightening storm.
The forests are closed to public - walkers & mtbers not because of the risk of them causing a fire but because if they are caught in the middle of a fire they're fucked.
My question was addressed to Ryan- god knows why you bothered to answer it? I recall you had quite a few pet peeves last year & couldn't manage to ignore them. You could just ignore them.

Guess it's just become a pet peeve that people last two years spent so much time fussing over the weather and river conditions leading up to the DB1K, there's pretty much always a plan B but it's a bit crap and totally out of our hands so show up at the briefing and deal with it.
Ohhh, do I sound like an angry little Transalper or what??
Padmei look what you started with "any fire danger alerts down there that would stop access to the usual route?" and I doubt you were even actually seriously asking even though you claimed to be.
    think I'll go

Along with my two 10 litre buckets of water I may also need to bring two "Time out" chairs if you two can't play nicely

I think both will be far too busy moaning about the rain.

Done but would be nice to define BMW 650 a bit more. F650GS, F650GS Dakar, F650 (thats really an 800), G650 (I'm sure there is there more - can't recall them all).

What he said - and with a 3 year old at home I'm starting to get the hang of the time out thing. Me, I use to just the old shaving strop around my arse. Takes ya pick.

So back on topic - there are no fire warnings/road closures that I'm aware of. I spoke to the forestry management firm and they are OK with us going through. Local cockies advise that tops (talk stalky grass for ye townees) is dry but there is mostly a green base (short grass) at the moment. They have had a bunch of precipitation (rain and snow) but it is also very hot and dry around the back of Waimate at the moment. Long story short God only knows what we will come across and you need to be prepared for anything i.e. 30+ degrees to -10 degrees and snow.

I'm not going to be going back through the group this year offering help - I wanted to play in the snow too last year

One thing I'm a touch worried about is the depth of water in the rivers and the state of the crossings. Apparently the entry to the first water crossing could be a bit interesting (where's me camera LOL )

    Cheers R

I dont want to stir the pot about the weather but the forestry down here isn't such a big problem at the moment, it is dry grass fires that start easier and are usually more exposed to wind so travel fast.

EVERYONE should have a fire extinguisher (or a bucket or water) or a swatter.

If you have a fairly open exhaust it would be prudent to put a mesh spark arrester on, if you don't and you cause a fire it could be seen as negligence and your insurance could back out on you.

I dont want to sound like a scare munger but people will take you to task especially when large sums of money are involved so use the CARE principal "Cover Arse Remain Employed"

Ok now that shit is done with I am looking forward to another awesome DB ride and catching up with a good bunch of guys (even if you sitting on a time out chair)

    See you down there
    Cheers Paul

For various reason I won't be riding this year, but the DB is in my blood so I'll still be staying with riders each night & doing work stuff during the day.
I will be taking my ute & trailer if anyone needs busted bikes recovered (Padmei), but within reason re location. Note this isn't a bike fix-it service - all riders must be self-sufficient.
However I may be able to carry stuff for riders in special circumstances - PM me to discuss.

    Hey Struan

Can you tow a smoke chaser fire unit if it is hot and a diesel heater in case it is cold , if it is hot we would also like nice cold drinks ready for us when we get back , if it is cold we would like heated towels and dry clothes ready for us when we get back please .

I know this sounds a little demanding but if you are going to be a good support bitch these are our expectations .

BTW you may need to leave room for a couple of chairs with special labels "play nicely"

Apart from that we have no demands ........ yet
    Cheers Paul

Unhappy Is the Universe trying to tell me something ??

A bit of a long sob story .......best grab a coffee or a Beer.

Back in early november 2011 i decided it was time to upgrade my DRZ400 and after carefull consideration settled on a new Husqvarna TE630.
Off i went to the local dealer to buy one. None in the country at the moment, so i ordered one which i was told should arrive in NZ before the end of December.
All good there, should be just in time for the 2012 Dusty Butt.
Anyway later in november on a taranaki adventure ride the DRZ developed a worring knock from the engine. Early december i pulled the engine down expecting to put a new piston and rings in it and be away again. To my dismay i found that the bore was scored and would need to be resleeved or replaced.

After a bit of internet time i located a 440 cc big bore kit at a shop in auckland and purchased online.
This kit was piston / rings gaskets and oversize sleeve. I had the kit sent directly to the engineering shop in hastings who was goung to do the resleeving work.
Had a phone call from them a few days later saying that the piston was standard size and the sleeve was a big bore size.
Back on the phone to the supplier, no other kit or piston in NZ at the time and as it was now the week before christmas and they were closing down for the next 3 weeks nothing could happen untill mid january.

By this time i was also getting quite nervous about the arrival of the new bike. Went back to see the dealer again, but could net get an actual date off him when the bike would be here.
Was not looking like it was going to be here before the end of january.

Time to come up with plan B.
I quickly located an IMS 18L tank for my partners DR650 and swaped the suspension back to standard from low rider mode, a few other mods and i was away on the Dusty Butt

New Husky didnt turn up at dealer untill nearly the end of Februray, but was worth waiting for. DRZ was sold and had gone to a new home as a 440

Roll on late 2012 and Santa said he was bringing me a FMF exhaust / EFI Tuner and Safari long range fuel tank for christmas, all ordered in early november again.
Well FMF ran out of the exhausts and had to back order them, Safari had to make a tank as they had none instock but both would be here in NZ by early December.
    Should be plenty of time.

Safari fuel tank was the last to arrive on about the 4th of december. At this stage i was down the south island for 10 days with work and a quick holiday.
Then back to work for a few days before having a Knee operation ( which had also been put off from an earlier date by the surgeon), with just enough recovery time to be back on the bike for the trip down to the Dusty Butt.

Weekend before Christmas while at home recovering from the knee surgery i fitted the exhaust / EFI power tuner and safari fuel tank. Filled the tank up with gas and fired her up.
All SEEMED good but as it was only 5 days after surgery i could not ride the bike.

Left it in the shed and after christmas went away on Holiday again for another 10 days.

Got home last weekend and opened up the shed to the smell of petrol, no obvious leaks but when i checked the level in the fuel tank it was down about 6-8 litres.

Pulled the fuel tank off on monday night and after some careful checking and measuring i found the the surface on the new tank where the fuel pump bolts to is not straight with a distortion of the mating surface of about 3-4 mm, way more than the rubber gasket could hope to overcome. Not really much i could do to remedy that.

Tried to contact Safari tanks in austraila, but guess what they are still closed for the Hoilidays.

So back to plan B again, my partners DR650.
Time to purchase some new front and rear brake pads and a countershaft sprocket, as they will probably not last the distance and organize another new tyre (17 inch instead of 18 inch ).
Give it a quick service and swap that suspension back to standard height and i should be good to go by next wednesday.

So Ryan, can you change my entry again from a TE630 to a DR650.

I am starting to wonder if the universe is trying to tell me that i should own and ride a DR650.
Here for a good time, not necessarily a long time
