    Interested,
You will only have to be on your restricted for 6 mths?
I thought with the changes in October to the rules, there was going to be no time reduction for age anymore.
Or is it because you started the process before the law change,
And you gain this advantage as part of the change over.
I am interested because I am in the same boat, having also finally become legal, with a learners etc

    Gidday Subike,
My understanding is it's only six months for me because according to NZTA I'm an old fart (over 25)
    More info here http://www.nzta.govt.nz/licence/gett...e-licence.html
It was updated in Jan 2012 so I presume it's still correct

    Cheers

Having teenage kids is a great motivator, I reckon I can't expect them to get it it unless I walk the talk.

    Eyesight test = check
    Basic handlers = check
    Theory test = check
Road and licence legal bike = check
Start lecturing kids about the importance of having a valid licence = check

    Restricted test = Sep 2012
    Full test = March 2013

When I look back and think of the time I rode without a licence (including a number of years as my sole form of transport) someone HAD to be watching over me!

My uncle did the same thing as you after alot of tears riding but back then you only had learners and full test.

Anyway never had a ticket or stoped in all those years.

Went for his full licence test and passed but when he got back to the cop shop he couldnt find a park so parked on the foot path and when he came out yup had a ticket for parking on path

You might want to do some more research newbie, with the license changes coming into effect this year, your age doesnt shorten the license duration.

Incidentally I got my full recently, I hope that helps.

Yes this is what I thought with the new changes
That the 6mth duration on your restricted for being over 25yrs old, is to be scrapped.
From my information, all will have to do the min 12mths on a restricted.
I also believe that exemptions are now no longer available because of the new power/weight ratios.
But are not sure if advanced rider courses shorten the time
The stats for accidents on large capacity bikes appears to be the return riders ,
Who hold licenses but have not ridden for many years.
With more powerful machines available than what was readily available in the 70 - 80's
Added that the size and weight has almost doubled since then, with cruisers getting fat.
The laws to be, seeing this, realize that these are a larger group of riders at risk,
There may be something new in the laws governing this too,
To be old and wise, first you must be young and stupid.

Remember, that GOOD QUALITY TRAINING stays with you forever. It doesn't get sold with your bike, or expire with your rego. It stays with you FOREVER..

It's not the message that is DELIVERED, but the message that is RECEIVED that is important.

    An update

I checked when I was eligible to book my full thinking I wasn't going to get the old fart exception as rightly pointed out by others it is gone.

I was expecting to be able to after 12months, but no, that's gone too, I appear to have been caught by the changes and have to sit on the restricted for the full 18 months.

On the bright sided, it's an AWESOME day in Central Otago today and the "Six Pack" are about to leave on a jaunt to Alex/Cromwell/Queenstown/Glenorchy/Paradise/Queenstown/Alex.
