    Classic Triumph mufflers

Sometime bikes or an era is almost defined by the exhaust system.

What would a classic 60's Triumph be without its lovely Burgess mufflers?

Now in my book the crazy exhaust system on a TR6C of any age is its crowning glory. Without it, its just a Trophy with a funny headlight and I am fortunate enough to have a fair few spare bits for my bike. Now I'm not megga anal about 100% factory as this bike gets used a LOT but I like it to look period ish....

Now I have a factory set that came with the bike but the top muffler got a bit crusty on the top where the barrell of the silencer body meets the hemisphere at the front of the body (they all do that sir). So to preserve the set I replaced the mufflers with some TOGA ones. They are pretty close to factory and have been on the bike 15 years and maybe 80,000 miles

Now this sets looking a bit thin.... (as you do) So I was just trolling about thinking its about time to do something about it.

So - I have found a NOS top muffer - cheap - so I grabbed it. Its stamped 12 - 69 so its bang on for my 1970 model. Yippee but having seen how good it was I then asked if they had the lower one as well. It turns out I can get another NOS lower one but its 'different'.

Instead of the perforated plate 1/3 of the way in it had a cross piece near the end of the outlet. Now I've never seen that inside a muffler yet it appears to be right for the 69 to 71 type system. (offset inlet stubs)

More than anything I'm annoyed that I didn't realise there were two types. So does anyone care to educate me on Triumph mufflers of the period????

I have no clue but am very impressed that you've owned the bike that long and put that many miles on it. fantastic.

We have had it more like 27 years and put more like 120,000 miles on it but the first 40,000 wore out the factory mufflers ;-)

It was my only bike and second car for ages.... Its been on some epic adventures
