    Wings clipped

    Yup, it had to happen.

Got caught pootling along at 112km/hr on Hutt Motorway opposite the Haywards turnoff.

My fault. Wasn't looking at the speedo.

5th one of these in 2 years.

    Roll on the 3-month stand-down.

And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

I am currently standing at 55 demerits.

Cop was actually really good about it. He asked about the bike, talked about his Hornet 900, and asked if I knew Dave and how he was doing.

Then he (helpfully) showed me his certificate of accuracy for his car and did 100km/hr down the road (and flashed his lights when he hit 100) to let me calibrate my speedo (which reads 8/kmhr slow).

Ouch! 8km/hr slow! sheebs. Just the right amnount to get you in trouble. I like that cop though. He did everything he could to help. Feels like my tax money is going somewhere good when I hear that.

Sorry about the fine though, that sucks.

the date the points kicks in are when the ticket has been issued. Not when you pay the ticket.

only way is go to court and hope for some reason they don't turn up.

otherwise you don't know if you'll be able to get off the next ticket between now and then.... its cutting it close...

My TLR was around 7kph out at 100kph (when doing 100kph, the speedo would read 107). I read somewhere a while back that most manufacturers actually factor in a margin of error of around 8% into the speedo readings so that they cant be held responsible for people getting fines. Hence, when your speedo reads 100kph, your actually doing closer to 90. However, people change the sprockets on their bikes (for those that have the speedo run off the gearbox) or oversized mags on their car and this alters the speedo's accuracy. Even changing your tyres for ones with a 5mm differnce in profile can change your speedo reading by several percent (off the top of my head I think its something like 4% on 17" rims).

If you are in Auckland, there is a 5k speedo test on the southern motorway down towards the bombays, you can use that to test how accurate your speedo is. Failing that, next time you spot one of those trailers with a speed sensor and a big sign on it, just do some runs past that to check your speedo. Dunno how accurate those are either, but its a good place to start.
