New Give Way rule at green arrow?

I enountered this today.

Bike and car both turning off main road into a side street. Car turning right with a green arrow traffic light. Bike turning left at a give-way sign (left turn not controlled by the traffic lights).

Who has right of way? The person turning left into the side street? Or the car turning right with the green arrow?

If the latter, I could not see whether they had an arrow, or whether they were turning on a normal green light.

Anyone?

Traffic turning on a green arrow has right of way.

Left turning traffic on a Give Way sign must give way.

So how am I supposed to know if they have a green arrow or not?

The green light supersedes the give way. The car has right of way.

Left turn is on a Give Way. At that point the person turning right should be deemed to be travelling straight. But he's got the arrow and the left turner was on a Give Way anyway so the bike gives way.

Doesn't matter if you're on the Give Way. It's a Give Way.

So if a car is turning right with a standard green (not an arrow), does that still mean they have right of way? (that might be where I'm getting confused)

Doesn't matter. You're on a Give Way.

Think of it as the Give Way/left turn being a separate intersection (cos it actually is).

It doesn't matter if they have a green light/arrow. By the time they get to you, you are on a feeder lane turning left and controlled by a give way. They are on a straight through piece of road and have right of way.

It's not rocket science, but it seems to be confusing some people, particularly in Auckland.

ok here is a an equivalent one.....the traffic turning right from Hutt road can only do so with green arrow,trafic turning left have a "free turn".Who gibves way....

It's simple. If you have a Give Way sign, the new rules do NOT apply. Give Way means just that - you give way to ALL.

I'd bet that the "free turn" has a give way sign...all the ones round here do anyway.
