Are open face helmets more dangerous?

Are open face helmets more hazardous then the full face helmets if one was to have a crash? Im curious because id like an open helmet for cruising but since the face is more exposed, I thought maybe its less protective. Theres the extra chin guard on the full face helmet which can provide good support on the helmet if you were to have an accident.
I understand that if you were to crash head first, its not going to end well, but id prefer the less harmful scenario.

Full face 100% of the time for me, I've seen results of a bin where the rider was wearing an open face.
I have refused to sell open face helmets in the past despite it being a personal choice of the wearer.

and, actually, it seems to a me a rhetoric question.

by the way, considering that of course somebody will suggest you that, remember that a flip up helmet is not a good choice.
in particular, a flip up helmet with the chin open is a lot more dangerous than a normal open face.

No argument from me about the full face giving more protection to the face in almost all scenarios... however, back in the day when full face helmets were becoming popular, there was a big debate around the question, do full face helmets cause more spinal injuries. I never recall having heard a definitive conclusion, and FF helmets have eveoled heaps since then, however if there is more risk of a spinal injury from a full face helmet then Normandy's question may have some basis.....

Which is worse...a severely gravel rashed face, nose ground to a stump, blinded or...a broken neck?

And in an accident situation I am sure the ambulance crew would prefer to attend an open face patient where they can administer first aid than a full faced victim where they may need to remove the helmet before administering first aid.

Get a Flip Front helmet, so you can Flip up when riding at low speeds

Not as good as a full face jobbie, but sort of gives you the best of both worlds

They wont break ya neck taking the helmet off, but if your neck was broken in the crash they could kill you or make ya a paraplegic by taking it off !

That's one of the reasons I have the new Shoei. It has removable creek pads so it is easier to get the helmet off.

I just hope if I do have a bad crash that someone knows what they are doing when it comes to removing bike helmets.

I still won't where an open face helmet.
