To answer a point raised about neck injuries on full face helmets, yes they were responsible for neck injuries.. that is why helmets now have a 'cutaway' rear section of the neck, whereas the old oned were a 'flat continuous ring' around the jaw and neck, meaning the material it was constructed of, became a 'ridge of hard material' your neck was snapped over.
    Re the question?
Used all types, open/full/flip.... I use only flip these days, but good quality ones.
Open face give you the advantage in traffic of better peripheral vision, AND importantly better noise registering around you.
Full face without question offers better facial protection. Flip front give 'best of both worlds'??????

Full face is definatly the go if you are out and about on the big trip, I got an open face for around town as I found in summer it was more dangerous overheating in my full face than wearing the open. Hot or not on the 100km/h + rides, the full face is on. I too had the misfortune to land face first on the ashphalt at over 85km/h and would not have wanted an open face helmet on.

Even full face helmets sometimes let you down.

probably fair to say the full face is the better of the two, however I wear a open face helmet with a visor made of lexan, that comes down past my chin.

Lexan is the same stuff they make fighter jet cockpits out of, so I fiqure thats pretty good protection.

full face make me claustrophobic, and i don't like they way that some of them restrict peripheral vision.

if you decide to buy a full face, make sure you have good side vision, you should be able to see sideways, without turning your head.

Did exactly the same, worn too the poly from the chin to the ear.
Two weeks after buying the thing too,,,pissed but happy.
Still wear an open face riding local anyway.
Open faces are not more dangerous, they are less protective,,,if I'm wearing less protection of just about any kind I ride slower.
For the most part it works.

I don't think I could handle the weight of a typical Harley.

Better for what. ALL styles of helmet have advantages ... and depending on the type of use the buyer intends ... will decide what is the best choice ...

If the fighter jocks were depending on their cockpit screens to stop their face being ground into the tarmac ... maybe you might think that.
I've seen the chin of full-face helmets ground down to nothing ... so don't be too confident about your visors protection ability.
