Graduating from 80cc, what next?

hi all
i have a 10 yr old nephew who has out grown is rm 80 and looking to the next step. his parents are bike ignorant and gone to uncle steve for advice. i suggested he look at a 85cc ,but is that too short a step, how much difference in power is there between the two,and is it too big a leap to a 125( i would thnk so).while hes happy rippin round the paddock, hes not overly confident jumping etc, although you wouldnt know that from the yarns.so i thought id throw it out to the experts. thoughts and theories appreciated.

he would have to be a very large 10 year old to fit a 125,

a big wheel 85 would be the next step, or maybe a KX100 if you can find one, (which is a 100cc barryl on a ~KX85 bigwheel)

the difference between an 80 and an 85 will be nothing if he is big enough then the 125 2s is the next step of a 150 4t i guess. basic of it are 80s where slowly done away with and everyone now makes them as 85s so all you would be doing if getting something that is newer ans 5cc more.

depending on the age of the rm80 there could be a diffence in hieght and suspension /power etc to a modern 85,

Would be a waste of money going from an 80 to an 85, 125 is best option. even if it is big for him he'll get used to it eventually.

disagree totally, way better to out grow a bike at that age than go to something to big, alot of kids race 85's until they are 16, in fact you can not race a 125 in NZ until you are 12,

another option would be to get the 80 bored out to a 110 then?

has he outgrown it size wise or power. Rm80s are quite grunty maybe he just needs a big wheel 85.

We are going through similar issue but with a 15yr old just sold his 03 yz85bw and now looking at what to get he is quite keen on 200 2s as most of our riding is trail. He has also thought about 05/06 125 and puting on a flywheel weight but we are not sure if that is going to give him the bottem end that he wants.

He went from PW50 to PW80 and then onto the 03 YZ 85 quite a step from the PW to YZ but he managed it well, second son has gone from the PW 80 onto XR100 and has been much easier but can see that the 100 is not going to last him long before he wants more.

My partners kid was on a quad when we meet put an end to that real quick next was the pw80 but after a number of frame repairs due to out riding it I upgraded that to a kx65 would have been an 85 but due to his weight and being rather short for a 12 year old there wasnt another option next will be an 85 in a couple a years when we have stretched him so he can reach the ground. its just a case of trying different thing out to find one that suit his needs and riding level.

mostly a size issue, hes tall for 10. but also he could do with more gg's

m,y gurl had the same problem so i went to boyds and they did her rm85 to be a rm 100 and shes got more grunt but same size till shes ready for the next step up to go from the rm 85 to make it a rm100 cost me 310.00 so try and ask your bike shop what the cost is to make into a 100cc just a thought hope this helps

Well my 2 cents worth is if he can just touch the ground on a 125cc with both feet tippee toes, then he is ready to ride it. If not then its a few more months on a 85cc. Take him to a bike shop and sit him on a few bikes and this will become self evident. Plus its free

Don't be afraid to keep him on a smaller bike tho as long as you can.
