I understand where you're coming from Frosty. I was forced to visit Auckland last week (Thu & Fri). What a fix you Guys and Gals are in. Can't drive a car because of the traffic jams. Can't ride a bike because it rains atleast 4 times a day, every day. Or have I just been unlucky and missed the 8 full dry days per year Auckland gets? Wonderful place. And what's with trying to find a decent pub that opens after 9pm??? Better nightlife hangouts around the Vatican City than that Viaduct.

Goretex is not waterproof on motorcycles - so check if you have goretex kit, that it has an internal liner. I also prefer my kit to have impact foam rather than plastic body armour. One of the good things about goretex outers is that they lose the water real fast, so you dont end up carrying the weight around. A good way to check the jacket is really high quality is to put a piece of paper in the external pockets and it should still be dry after riding for an hour or two in the most severe rain storm. Cheap kit, will soak the pockets first.

Other things I have learned is to make sure that the jacket has a high neck (that you can easily clip closed with one hand). When its raining you need this to go up and under your lid or the rain will hit your neck and go down inside the jacket. Also saves on using a neck warmer on cold days and you can leave it unclipped on warm days.

The jacket should come down low enough so that wind doesnt lift it, and the trousers should come up to the middle of your waist (or thereabouts) and well down over your boots/shoes (to just below your ankles), they should have a zip/fastner at the ankle to seal them off (I actually just use a cheap waterproof over trou).
