    BMWR1200GS does not start

    Ah crap, not again!
    My 2005 R1200GS failed on me on a ride nr Wanaka in 2008.

    Looks like the same fault, or the same system.....

    Ran to Akaroa and back today, all sweet. Refuelled back in ChCh, bike won't start.
    Well, it fired for a few seconds. Next time less, finally none - just cranking over but not firing.

    So, sounds like fuel not being pumped.
    Relay looks corroded again, not as bad as back then. AA also says there is no power getting to that unit, but not 100% relying on that.
    All start up sequence, dash etc seems normal.

    I am meant to be on one of those ACC subsidised courses tomorrow, and I doubt I can get the bike on the road in time.

    Anyone have one of these, or equivalent, locally?

    Ran into a couple who were stranded at some tourist shop by the sea between Kaikoura and Blenhiem about 4 years ago. Their BMW's fuel pump had stopped working and they were talking to the BMW people in Auckland trying to work out the problem.

    The brother's shat itself last year. There wasn't one on the shelf anywhere in the the country at the time, but to be fair they took one out of a new machine in Orks and got it to him in Blenheim the mext morning.

    Isn't there a voltage reduction involved in one of the service notices?

    When mine crapped out in 2008, local dealer switched out one in a stock bike, new seal.
    Thought that was me sorted, never gave it another thought.

    I see they have redesigned the location in the newer bikes, and further redesigned the part, to make it more resistant to failure.

    Doesn't help me until I get a new-new part

    V-Strom? - in all other respects I prefer this bike! Gotta admit though, it's pretty slack from BMW in this area.

    Bit curious that the AA guy could not detect power coming to the FPC. Will see tomorrow.

    They are made in Germany, as is my Ford Focus :-)


    Fixed: It was the FPC - again.
    So the first one was replaced, and has a blue seal for the replacement.
    This time, it's the black powder-coated one. I'll make up a by-pass from the dud unit this time.

    BMW Jeff Gray were helpful in having read my email early, from last night, and were expecting my call. They were also helpful in agreeing to swap out a part from a stock bike
    However, I disagreed with them somewhat when they tried to charge me for removal and refitting of the unit from their stock bike
    I pointed out that hundreds if not thousands of these have failed globally; it's a high-proile failure and most sensible dealerships should carry this as spare. I did not appreciate the ethics of them trying to charge me for the inconvenience of their parts policy and suggested they change it.
    I was told that BMW were being helpful (which they were, which I expect - but for which I am nonetheless grateful) but I replied that that did not mean I agreed in any way with their charging model.
    Apparently, they 'didn't think it would be a problem'
    I asked how much they planned to charge, and with their reply I retorted that it was a THREE MINUTE job to remove from my bike....

    I wasn't charged.
    Later I received a call checking if my diagnosis was correct and whether the part had solved the problem with the BMW - a call which I also appreciated.

    Still, a somewhat bitter taste on the attitude front.

    So, I made it to the ACC-subsidised On-Road-Skills Course with Dan, a little late, but before morning tea.

    in my experience,and I can tell you with BMW that is years and years-the BMW philosophy goes something like this...


    We make the best bikes in the world and also the most expensive.Our buyers are rich,so we intend to make them pay and pay.
    After all,the best doesnt come cheap....and if anyone ever questions this,repeat after me..."We make the best bikes in the world........
