    I ride...because its all I know

Im one of the few males that will freely admit...I can't drive a car for shit! (my missus calls me granma when I drive...slow and nervous..and I kerb grind!)
Its true, Im scared of cars (inside and out!) but thats due to my crazy friends when I was young, they either crashed them, flipping them (hilux-nose to tail 7times!) and one even chased a possum off a cliff!!(no friggin shit!...we landed in a tree! and bent the car in half...see why Im scared of them!)

I have been riding bikes since I was 8yrs old, dirt bikes, road bikes, race bikes even tried speedway (swinger!...yup...one of "those")
I feel safe on a bike, in control and alive!...30yrs of daily riding, rain, hail or shine...and every day I fight & pray that I survive the trip, the traffic, the drunk drivers etc...and get home to my family and then get up and do it again...and hope too continue for at least another 30 years

...I truly hope my kids Ryder (22months) and his little sister Winter (will be with us in 5-6 weeks) will give motorcycles an honest try, then they too can experiance the freedom and excitement that we all know and love!

Why do WE ride...for the sheer love of it!

Not really. I think we all ride for different reasons. Some ride because they have to, as in no other means of transport, some ride as part of their job, most ride because they enjoy their bike and freedom associated with it. But I can guarantee that most if not all ride for the love of motorcycling. And I doubt that there is any biker business attached to it. Unless you are a poser ofcourse, and only ride to impress others. But I doubt that is the case in most here

What 'freedom', exactly, is associated with a motorbike that somehow doesn't apply to a car?

A different kind of freedom. Not saying you can't enjoy your car, because you can, but to most riding a bike is a different experience. Different skills are needed, more concentration. Hard to explain, but I certainly have a different feeleing when I ride my bike to when I drive. Can't really explain, just that it feels different.

to add to above, that feeleing is different when I fly my plane. Its a totally different experience. Again you rely on different skills, your awarness is different. Again hard to explain, other that i am in my inner happy place to be able to see the world from the third dimension, from a great hight. Most people don't get to experience that. It feels very fulfilling and I find my self at peace when I am up there in the sky

Read the first chapter of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle maintenace and it explains it pretty well. Talks of being in a car is like watching the landscape going by on a TV. No sensual feelings, like smells, touch & feel.

I ride because my husbands such a lousey rider and he couldnt hear me when I nagged at him!!!

If enjoying riding a bike is silly then silly I am - I don't care.

Sometimes I happen to think about such question, and my answer is exactly the same. I do always my best to use bike instead of car when my work is far enough from the place I live in.

    cheers
