    kick-start not working when hot

    heya
I just found out (after stalling while trying to do a hillstart in 2nd) that my bike (1998 RG-150)doesn't want to start with the kick when the engine is hot. I can kick all i want but i have to crash start (it starts fine with a crash start). It starts first kick when it is cold, or after a few minutes (like after i get petrol). Anyone else have this problem?
    THanks

EDIT: maybe i'll just not stall

take it to the top of the takaka hill and burn it as a peace offering to the biker gods... then from that moment on it will NEVER happen to you again!!!

    on that bike

    what a ride so far!!!!

Do you mean the kickstarter doesn't work,or the bike won't start?

If the kickstarter is slipping when hot then the clutch is slipping, you'll have to adjust your cable,or clutch,or replace the clutch.

If the bike is just not starting when hot I'd look at the mixture,it could be too lean or too rich on the idle adjustment.

A little trick I was taught was to hold the throttle on full and start it up, for some reason when it's hot my bike will only start that way.

    Hope it helps.

FROSTY: My bike is too good to burn as a sacrifice - but thanks
MOTU: It is just that it won't start with the kick - I'll look into the idle screw, i think it idles too low - thanks
CSL: I'll try that tomorrow - thanks

The kickstart idler gear meshes directly to the gear on the clutch basket that in turn meshes to the crank. Clutch has nothing to do with it or you wouldn't be able to kick it over with the bike in gear and the clutch in.

That means the bike is too rich, full throttle clears it out, possibly what is wrong with the original pos's biket, but he's still not being clear on symtoms.

An RG is a 2smoker? There's your problem
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

If it won't fire up when hot, a change of fuel octane might help.

Chuck a new sparkplug at it.

And if that doesn't work, remove the old plug and install another new one (not the thrown one)

when it is hot, i can kick and kick the starter, the engine just won't fire. When it is cold, it fires first time.

RR: The owners manual says to only use high octane, I run it on 96
WT, do i need to buy two new plugs then?

It sounds almost as if the mixture is too rich, as Motu suggested.

we all get a little bit too rich at some stage in our live's and then we go out and buy a motorcycle, it's down hill from then on,but surley that's a good thing if your kick start don't work Hmmmmm..

    Could be spark timing.

I had an old Honda with that same problem. Started easy when cold but not when hot. If it didn't start within first couple kicks after stalling, there was a 15min wait for it to cool down or go find a long hill slope to crash start.
90% of the time spent writing this post was spent thinking of something witty to say. It may have been wasted.

    You should burn it LOL
To every man upon this earth
    Death cometh sooner or late
And how can a man die better
    Than facing fearful odds
For the ashes of his fathers
And the temples of his Gods
