Honda xr200 2001 clutch recomendations

When my honda gets hot, the clutch loses progressive feel and becomes on/off as well as some noise from the basket? I am thinking the plates etc are overdue for replacement and basket due for inspection and finger clean up. I was just going to buy a $58 clutch kit from MOTORXPARTS on TM but thought it might pay to seek advice from those who know first..your thoughts please..

get the specs of the clutch (plate thickness service limit, and clutch spring length limit) and measure them first, and then see what is needed before ordering parts,

when was the last time you changed the oil? if its it very old it can make the symptoms that you suggest,

+ 1 for what Scott said give it an oil change and check you've got 3-5mm free play on the clutch lever as an over tight cable will cause the clutch to heat up frying the oil and plates.

Cheers for that-I change the oil often and clutch cable has the right freeplay. Good advice on stripping and measuring first. I use a basic Castrol[as recommended] mineral oil -I have wondered if a higher spec oil would help?

a higher spec oil will not help, you seem to have checked the basics first which is good,

As long as the oil you are using is suited to wet clutches it will be fine. I use Castrol GPS in every bike. Unsure whats recommended for a XR. What also happens over time is the basket wears out and the plates bind as they slide up in down. This can have a bad effect on feel and i am pretty sure this will be the problem in your case.
