    Riding the ZX-7R

okay, went down to tauranga and took this beast for a spin. And i can say without a shread of hesitation that it made me shit my pants.

It may not seem like much to all you 600 and 1000 riders out there but jumping from a 250 with 40hp to a 120hp Race Spec bike is quite an experience.

The fact that it did 160 in 2nd without straining was enough to put me in my place, i took it through a few twisties but was having trouble judging speeds etc so just took it easy.

Compared to the GSXR750 (94) i rode last weekend it pulled a lot harder and was also considerably easier to handle at all speeds.

So the final decision is that i will be finding an intermediate bike for the mean time. Probably a ZXR400 or similar or possibly a 600 Tourer like the GSF or hornet.

I do still really love the bike for its style and am in awe of its power. For the better of my own life i think its best to wait a bit longer and get some more experience stepping up through the power, personally a 3x jump in power is a bit much for me. To all you guys n girls riding the 600/750/1000+cc road/race bikes i salute you... that shit aint easy

yeah it does a bit, im still keen for a bigger/faster sport bike, but not a two stroker so it looks like i'll have to get my full and find something a bit higher cc'd. It was really quite an eye opener and im glad i got the chance to check it out instead of just handing over the cash and then finding out...

also it wasnt quite so fun as riding the ZXR250, probably coz i was worried about stiffing it into a corner or something like that... not my bike... YET

    Cool

Good on you for making the right decision to wait, after finding out whether or not it was the right type of bike for you...

You recognised that the power of the bike was too much for you at this moment in time for you.

    Well done lad.

i will tame it in a year or two, but i'll need a bit more cash than just the purchase price as i can imagine i'll spend a lot of time at pukekohe honing my cornering etc on it, the road didnt feel like the right place to be letting it loose

    Hey mate,

Sorry I couldn't come, brake pads are worn down to nothing at the front.

Now when you say, "And i can say without a shread of hesitation that it made me shit my pants."

Could you elaborate on that statement a bit- with an educational reply. You are probably along with Dveus one of the fastest 250 riders with a decent amount of experience and you believe you will better of with a 400 or 600 tourer ......

A lot of people here go on about it's all about self control, blah, blah....

So give us a bit more feedback - here we have you (who I know can ride) who says naaa I need a 4hundy or 600 tourer....and the others who say just buy a 600...... so ??????

And by the way today at the BRONZ course there was this guy (old fella 45-50yr old) who's only been riding for a year, did his learning on a Virago 250 and bought a Blackbird 1100 as his next bike - AND he was as comfortable on it as some of the other big bike riders with years of experience......

not totally sure yet. Im hoping to get hold of a top end 400, probably not a VFR though, otherwise i might look at a hornet type bike such as the GSF600 bandit on trademe atm... basically like the honda hornet but by suzuki.

Yes but he was OLD ,MATURE......testosterone has seeped from his creaking bones, he is now filled with self preservation and self control.

A joke is perhaps the most suitable form of explanation:
[young bull to old bull] look at that paddock of heifers lets rush down there and fuck one
[old bull to young bull] no! lets walk down there and fuck the lot!

    do you understand grasshopper?

ermmm, where to begin. It is kind of hard to explain. You have to remember that the bike weighs in at 235 and puts out 120+hp. When i left the guys house and was just riding in the residentials it was fine, and cruising it was fine, but as soon as i put the pace on it didnt feel quite so comfy... possibly because i take a while to get tuned into bikes properly (with the exception of the CBR/ZXR) Possibly if i had taken it for a 100km ride or something then i would have liked it more, been more relaxed, but at first feel it does seem like a big jump.

Also from what i have seen anyway the younger members i regard as fast riders (TS, MR, KK, Affman etc) stepped from 250s to 400s and felt comfortable their before stepping up to the 600's with the exception of MR perhaps (im not sure of his story).

Way i see it i would rather take it a step at a time. All the bike shop ppl have said about the jumps they have taken... and as i am sometimes a slow learner i will benefit more from incremental (sp) steps than just going "oh yeah baby give me a 750 homologation race bike anyday" - i like riding, i really enjoy it, but i cant if im dead

as for the old guy on the BRONZ course.... the blackbird is a sports tourer like the ZZR1200 and busa, yes they are fast when you want them to be, but they are also able to used purely for cruising too, im sure he aint a knee down rider...
