Did they make cr500's before '86? Would be a crazy learners bike (if I remember rightly all bikes under 660cc older than 86 are LAMs approved?)

They have to be road legal first, an 85cr500 was never road legal.

Has to be under 150kw/tonne. Cr500 is way over that

    cr500

Actually, there was a model that was road legal, a company called CRE engineeriing complied 250 2001 cr500's and sold them on australian market. These were the last of the cr500's. All of them were complied to world standard compliance and have a compliance plate referring to that standard, in that data base wherever that is. A number of them were brought off shore, mostly the states, all have flown though compliance standards without a hitch. They are one of the most sort after model and can fetch $8500 AUS for a rough one to $1100 for a minter, if you can find one. However that does not count as its a 2001 cr500 and not an 85 cr500.
However that compliance could be very useful if say you wanted to comply an AF conversation. As it states a CRE500 had 35hp!. This was bacause they had to restrict it to make the noise regulations, most who brought them took them off afterwards and run an aftermarket.
So I figure if I was to comply an AF I could use that as a reference as to rated HP. I would have to restrict it make the noise check, it'll run like shit but as the previous have done I would too.
In light of the inspector that comes to look at it, he wont be so hard to please if its got 35hp and not 65hp. Not that my conversation wouldn't hold up to it but why push your luck.
So you can't ride it on a L plate, but you maybe able to get an AF road legal .

    Speaking of HP/tonne.
Chris Mansons new ride, 2012 crf450 frame.
CR500 bottom end with a liger cylinder and head bored to 600cc, hes had it running and reckons it makes 15-20hp more then his 555 you can see in the picture, that puts out 75hp, thats 90hp!!!

ended up with the bike and me on one hell of an angle - right shoulder was ready to kiss the dirt - twisted the throttle
and the K5 stood up in yacht like fashion to carry on without incident - Magic ! Cubes Cubes Cubes ..... !

Just do what I did to get my hands on a KX500 engine. Buy a whole bike via ebay, then ask them to pull the motor and send it to you. Tell them they can sell the rest off for their troubles. I needed an 85 KX500 donk as a donor for my SR500. The whole bike cost me $550.00, he did the work for my idea. 86 onwards are KIPS equipped and the go.
