Wow, another "I want a screen because I'm a massive softcock and I can't handle a bit of turbulence" thread.
I have just fitted an Givi A34 to my Yamaha XVS650A and it works just fine for me. It has a 4 point fixing and the only problem was that the original was designed for a 50mm top tube on the forks whereas mine are 60mm. A larger hose clamp and a bit of sanding to reshape the curve in the standoff and all is well.
Cheers,
Rhys
The good thing with the AF49 I find is the adjustability. Nearly as good as the electric screen on the R1100RT bikes. I have mine at about half height which means my line of sight is about 50mm above the edge of the screen and it works well for general touring, but if it's hot I could just drop it down to the lowest position, and if really wet pull it right up. I find at city speeds its a simple matter to reach over and flip the clips then move it up or down - might be a bad a idea at open road speeds - haven't tried yet
Hopefully doing the coromandel loop next week![]()
Here's an original R1100R/850R brochure with lots of interesting info about the bikes.
Daughter and I rode Whangarei to Whitianga around Coromandel as far as Colville on Monday, then across to Kawhia yesterday via Waitomo and some other good roads across the Island, then back to Whangarei today. Trying to go on the other roads that I don't normally get to ride when I am going "somewhere". Weather was nasty and nice several times each day - but overall an awesome trip.
Stopped at Hamilton Motorcycles today to replace my rear brake pads that were down to the metal - just the best the service there- very much appreciated.
A few pics from the journey below... We live in an amazing beautiful country.![]()
Off for a big trip on Monday on the R1100R.
Monday Whangarei to Tauranga, Tuesday to Napier, Wednesday to Picton, Thursday to Wanaka via West Coast, Friday morning to Invercargill. Then over the weekend (if I still feel like riding) around the Catlins to Dunedin, Monday to Christchurch, Tuesday to Wellington, Wednesday maybe home to Whangarei.
Hopefully all set to go - I'm stopping at Hamilton Motorcycles for a tune-up on the way through on Monday on their BMW computer - hopefully will help with fuel consumption as it's running too rich. I've got the radar detector set up on the screen with a bit of velcro to the top of the speedo (in case I get careless). Now just need good weather. Give me a wave if we pass somewhere.
Had a great ride for the last 10 days. Only a couple of days rain - Tauranga to Napier via Gisbourne last week just got wetter and colder. Biggest day was Picton to Wanaka via Chch (where I got a new rear tyre fitted) then through Geraldine, Twizel etc. Next day through Cardrona and Crown Ranges was the ultimate motorcycle heaven. The "R" loves those hairpins
. I did the Catlins up to Dunedin on Sunday - went out to Nugget Point Lighthouse - well worth the trip and ride. I came up to Picton via the Inland Kaikoura Road - a really nice twisty ride. Yesterday rode home from Wanganui - another fairly long day. Overall the bike went great. Seem to have been averaging around 7l/100km or 40mpg. The idle regulating valve was faulty and Hamilton MC ordered a new one that they fitted on the way back through and were able to adjust the balance better - hopefully will see some improvement in economy now.
Pics below are: Nugget Point - Catlins, Burt's bike - Invercargill, Cardrona, Crown Ranges, Lake Tekapo, getting ready to go.
Enjoying your reports and photos. I have done the Crown Ranges in a car twice in the last two years and just wish I was on a bike.
I have completed over sixty thousand Kim's now on first a 93 1100RS and now an 1100S with Remus system panniers Ventura luggage rack and bags and tank bag. I have really enjoyed the qualities you have found on the BMWR1100. Great power for the real world and confident handling.
The screens on the 1100RS were noisy and turbulent but good protection in bad weather. The 1100S quieter but less protection.
Looking forward to more reports from you.
Good to hear... you've done a lot more k's than I have so far (about 7000 for me). I haven't been out riding for a month or so but yesterday did a loop around the local beaches with a mate and remembered why I love the boxers so much. Was a great day and I put the screen right down - lots of tight corners - like you say great power and confident handling in the real world. I've been playing with the idea of going back to a jap bike (Bandit or TDM900) but my ride yesterday convinced me (for the moment anyway
) that there is nothing better for all-round fun easy riding over any distance than a BMW boxer
. I'm thinking maybe a GS for my next bike for a bit more suspension travel and tank range (once I save a up a few more dollars
).
I have listed my bike on TM if anyone interested. Very reluctant to sellbut need to free up some money to do some work on the house...but if it doesn't sell I'll be doing another South Island trip on it in a months time
. If it sells I might pick up something cheaper for a while.

Yeah the TDM would be on my list to replace the R definitely - as would the RT and ST for the bigger tank and extra range. I've briefly ridden all of the above and could go with a higher mileage one of any so long as they have been well looked after and the price was right.
