600cc exhaust on a 150cc motorcycle?

Hi guys,

I've gone through a thread quite similar to this but that wasn't conclusive enough for me to make a decision. I've got a Yamaha R-15 (150cc), can I put on a 600cc (R6) aftermarket exhaust on it for some gains (roar n performance)? The stock exhaust on this ride is not very loud

.

I believe every exhaust is matched to a specific engine size and this always creates a doubt in my mind. What do you guys say? If this is possible what's the best possible place to get this done, so far I've got Custom Chambers on my mind. I live in Auckland CBD area.

You can put anything you like on it but whether it will run allright is another matter altogether. There is a real science to getting an exhaust married to the right air flow in and out of the bike, with the right amount of fuel for the bike to run well at all positions on the rev counter. I would say that free flowing the exhaust to that degree would make it run as lean as and would require some pretty serious alterations to air filter, air fuel mix etc.
Then of course there is the matter of the noise that comes out of ot......it may sound like a fart in a tin can....

PS.....I should add that changing your exhaust will almost certainly mean a change in girlfriends as well......because you will end up spending all your time in the garage phaffing about with the the bike....

Basically what Skippa said. You can make anything work well (within reason).
I have had a ZX9R exhaust on a ZXR400 and was rubbish until I got the engine tuned to suit the new pipe.

If you just want it to make more noise. Simply bolt the muffler on. If you want a HP increase you will probably find that to get it past the stock mufflers HP will require quite some work (needles, jets, dyno tuning, advance CDI/remapping etc).

Factory performance parts are the way to go (not sure if GYTR make stuff for the 150 - but if they do it would be my pick).

As for the science part - completely agree also. But when it works, and it set properly the results are amazing. I really miss my ZXR400 - it was a fantastic bike apart from making me completely tone deaf at 100kph. (stupid harmonics)

It's a bit like saying ... I've got a Toyota Corolla and want to put a muffler off a Holden V8 for some performance/noise gains ...

Your 150 will not sound (anything) like a 600 ... nor will you get (any) performance gains.

But ... you will ensure anybody seeing and hearing it ... will get a good laugh.

I doubt you'll release any HP with an R6 pipe, if you want more noise just do as SMOKEU said, but I'll say it again, it'll sound incredibly gay.

Pretty much this. It's a 150cc 4t, dude. You will not extract any decent poke out of it and it will just sound lame - like a giant fart cannon muffler on a Civic. Your stock muffler is designed by the manufacturers as a compromise between build cost, reliability, emissions and sound restrictions and performance, as is the whole rest of the engine. What you'll probably end up doing is make it sound like shit and run bad while pouring money down the sink.

And yeah, if I saw an R-15 with an R6 muffler on it I would piss myself laughing. It's like the guy I saw in Auckland recently who had a black Hyosung GT250R with Ducati decals on the tank. To the non-biker, they might actually think it's a Duke. Anyone with basic knowledge of motorcycles will think "what a fucking tool".

Unless you're turning this bike into a bucket racer. In which case I say full steam ahead, because buckets are awesome.

Well, if your 150cc is about 20-25 hp and an R6 is about 115hp by adding the R6 exhaust on your 150cc you can expect to get the average of the horse power of the two bikes. (25+115 = 140hp / 2 = 70 hp.) This is of course assuming you can buy the power band upgrade, or in fact install two power bands.

Taking the piss

No...there will be little noticable difference expect for a bit of noise.

No self respecting Bucketeer would perform this modification (but I am sure there are quite a few with no self respect that would...)

if you really want to go faster, put the exhaust money towards a bigger cc bike IMHO. much more reliable and cost effective way to gain HP.

if you just want to sound like the aforementioned 1300cc auto civic with milo tin riveted to the back, then follow smokeus suggestion

A piece of plastic catching on the spokes sounds just the same, but if I was 9yrs, I suppose the plastic wouldn't look as flash.

ok ok I get it won't ask this again, this guy on trademe was tryin to convince me for buying an exhaust for my 150cc and he was confident that it'll be a good mod...me being a rookie needed your advice! bt now this mod is out of question. thanks fellas!!!
