eek Bike struggling to start up

    Folks,

So I was overseas for about 6 weeks and meanwhile I gave a key to a friend to start the bike every few days. And so he did. When I came back it was all good (and with no extra K’s on the counter to suggest he used it ). However, my bike seems to struggle to start. I now have to give it a bit of throttle acceleration while pushing the ignition button for it to start . Before, I had to just push the ignition button and off it starts. Any idea what could that be or how to fix it?

Clearly he must have been sodomising it. There is no other reasonable explanation.

How long did he run it each time he started it?
if it was only a few min, then you might find that your plugs are fouled from unburnt fuel.
Pull the plugs and give them a clean, then,
Get it going, and go for a decent highway speed ride, to ensure the engine gets to it operating temperature.
This will burn off any built up fuel in the combustion chambers, and also blow out unburnt fuel in the exhaust.
Short runs in any smaller cc engine, be it air or water cooled can do more damage than good.
If you are only going away for six weeks, then just turn the fuel off, and disconnect the battery.
Unless you are parking your bike outside in the cold/wet, then as long as 6 mths between runs will do little or no damage.

    plugs..

    Yeah. You make sense!

I thought 6 weeks would not be long enough to need any special attention like unplugging the battery and shutting the fuel if the engine gets started for few minutes on a regular basis, but obviously I was wrong . I will clean up the plugs and give it a good highway run, and see what happens.

    Cheers..

I'll have it, I don't have any. I broke the last one I had.

Thrash the tits off it! If the problem is still there, it's your problem.

Have you fed it any fresh petrol? It tends to go off a bit if left sitting, as above take it for a decent ride to burn any crap out of the engine and use up the old fuel in the tank.

Oh good heavens. the fuel has not gone off after 6 weeks. The bike was not ridden for 6 weeks but started say 12 times & not run for long enough to recharge the battery or clear out the rich starting mixture.

Time to unsubscribe, this thread is a bit

Next time disconnect 1 of the battery leads. Or, you could remove the battery and give it to a mate to plug into a charger for a few hours (depending on the charger output) every 3 weeks.

I went away for 6 weeks and did nothing. It still goes just as bad as before I left.

My Range Rover was off the road for 4 weeks and I saved $500 in petrol so I thought I'll get another one and save $1000.

    Sorry for thread distraction
