It works better with an old plate that has a 1 or I or a 0 or O in it.

Getting the personalised plate with an I in place of the 1 means that it looks similar enough to the old plate to avoid any adverse attention from using the old plate in place of the new one.

Will they let you do that? I have an old caravan plate with 666 on it and was told I can not use it for anything other than the caravan.

The personalised plates system won't allow you to have any rego that has been in the system - even one that has been long decommissioned.

They will happily issue a plate that is very similar to another plate though.

The 1/I and 0/O changes are the least noticeable.
