I had a great time (first time in sand on the KLR). There's 5 kg of sand in front of my garage where I washed my dirty bike! I'd like to thank Dino for encouraging (cajoling?) me into attempting to get up the entrance to Wilson's road. It was a big step to try something that you are convinced will end in failure. Although I didn't make much progress, I think I will try something like this again the future, and I might do better. I had never ridden on well-packed sand before. It wasn't so bad at 100 km/h. Sure, the front end wiggles when you cross over the tracks of other vehicles, but you soon get used to it.
Shewolf took some great video footage. (I am going to have to get a helmet camera at some stage. I've added afew lo-rez pics that I took.) After the surf and the sand, the coffee at the Muriwai cafe tasted all the better!

Just awsome, Even my wife watched it (High praise indeed)
mission acomplished in regard to trip as saw KLR on its side stuck in the sand
could post some pics but dont think could compete with the professionals.
Awesome ride and Murawai cafe stop at end was a highlight even if King of the hill award went to an un-named Suzuki rider (who may or may not have had a little help behind the scenes to claim that prize)
Twas a good day indeed (was Dino the name of the 4WD, driver ?) I heard some comment after you left that you were threaten with being beaten by a girl at Wilson's rd. great you had a go but on the day us men just didnt have the goods (life be like that at times)
Next time we go all the way to the end![]()
Maybe I am confusing Dino with 10bikekid?
I have a confession: I and 5 other long-time sports bike riders have all be bitten by the Adventure Touring bug and have gotten adventure touring bikes. We'll spend a couple of weeks camping in the South Island next March. I want to build up my unsealed/sand/off road riding skills to the point where I won't make a complete ass of myself on the tour. So far so good. I now feel a lot more confident in sand. Although I am a novice, I am enjoying adventure touring a lot more than I thought I would.
I think I will give Wilson's Road another try, provided there is a tow rope and a good sense of humour all round. It really wasn't that bad, although my technique sucks and the KLR is a porker. BTW, where are all the other KLRs?

If you've seen Dino hurtling towards you it's not something you forget in a hurry
There'll be another visit soon as tides right in November - I've got a few new-to-sand buddies who're also keen to give it a go. You must've legged it back down the beach man, we didn't see you for dust!![]()
