Mid last year I sold my dirt bike and decided to get an Adventure bike....it is possible that I have a good look at the Husky metioned here but at the time it was overpriced as you could buy a new one for not much more. I ended up buying a Husky Terra which is ok but in many ways a but of a compromise.

what put me off one of those or a 525 or something similar is their ride ability over fair distances on tarasel to get to metal. I live in South Auckland and there is very little metal close that hooks up to make a contingent ride so I have been going down, exploring and getting reaquinted with roads like the Klondike and Port Waikato to Raglan - haven't gone round the back all the way to Kawhia but it is on my list.

I'm interested in the pros and cons between the big bore enduro bikes vs the mid size adventure bike. Also interested in the comment about putting road gear on a KTMEXC 300 - my last dirt bike was a husky WR300 and I wouldnt have considered roadifiying that as it would have vibrated like hell and been pretty hard on the backside- but loads of fun on metal roads and I could still have gone to the odd trail ride

All stuff I'm interested in.... I just want something light with ~50ish Hp that I can have two wheel sets, one 17" for street and one for Adv/Trail riding (tyre swap from adv to dirt when a trail ride is on). Would love 3 bikes, one for each job, but thats just not gonna happen, and I quite like the motardness rather than a full street bike.

So far I'm thinking ~450-500cc enduro

The WRR could come close with the BB kit, Stroker + cams ~ but and only ~40hp

I also forgot to mention with a two stroke-the hassle of carrying oil for the mid ride re-fuels

Which all starts to sound like a KTM 690.

I quite like the road riding but I do miss the trail rides. I figure with a big bore trail bike with a bigger tank, fiddle with the gearing, decent seat might be the go. Can do the easy loops anyway. And I don't mean a DR 650 either

Yeah... Just seems to big... 140kg vs 110 on the 500exc.... Nice service intervals though.

I thought this particular discusssion within the the thread was about what sort of bike was ideal for the unique conditions imposed by the challenges of getting to and riding on gravel in the Waikato. Guess I was wrong in my assumption.

One of the reasons I haven't bothered much with boards like this is in recent times is that life is too short to be hassled by people who don't have any thing better to do than crticise people who don't conform to their rules.

I might start a thread called Waikato ADV rides where you can discuss anything remotely connected to rding ADV Bikes in the Waikato- you will be welcome to join.

Jeez, I can't imagine why people on forums like this would hassle you
One of the biggest problem with this board is noise to signal ratio, and this is a thread that you can look in quickly to see who is riding locally, and where (it is after all called "Waikato ADV rides!", not "ADV Bikes for the Waikato"). So I simply made the suggestion that if you'd like to discuss you choice of bike you start another thread.

Ok fair enough. As you can see we are noobs. Now we know the threads scope and will stick to it... Maybe you should have mentioned the scope to start with if there was a problem.

Maybe there does need to be a 'Waikato Adventure rides chit chat thread'.

Didn't mean to cause a fuss.

This is part of the reason I asked about posting ride reports on here, seemed like it was ok from the responses and non, that I got.... And they don't fit the scope you're talking about.

Do it.... This is all sounding rather draconian. Fun police etc.

No offense intended for the threds regulators, any I have talked to have been salt of the earth types.
