BMW R80RT to be sold maybe?

Oookkkaayy. I've had to give up riding since my Ducati got broken (sob) and my 17yr son isn't really interested in my BMW. Well he is but his mum isn't so that's the end of that. Its a 1985 ex-Ministry of Transport bike bought by me when they were all sold. Registration on hold. Rust patches on the tank. Is it worth much or should I just put it in the back of the shed?

Part of me wants an owner who will appreciate the machine, partly I could do with the money, and the nostalgic part of me says keep it...but in all honesty for no clear purpose.

build yourself a cafe racer and you can thrash it knowing parts are way way easier and cheaper than Ducati bits.
My $1100 R65 is much more thrashable than my mates 1000S as if mine blows up I have a $350 engine for it....he is worried about his valve service being due..
My Ducati is on hold and I ride the BMW...

oh, and whats the real-world difference between the RT and RS other than one is Reisetourer and the other is Reisesport (rennsport -whatever)

Post 81 models have better everything, the pre 81's have heavy flywheels, less rigid swingarm not as good brakes....they can all be retro fitted though. BMW's are good like that. Any BMW questions feel free to PM.
I think they would make a pretty good ADV bike.

I can't remember the original rego although I'll have the ownership papers somewhere. The bike was parked up for 12 years when we had children and re-registered in about 2004.

Just wandered out to the garage to have a look. Nice machine. I remember first buying it and being in awe at the intuitive German engineering. Coming from a Yamaha XS650B, it was a revelation in design. A shim to release the petrol tank, one nut releases elsewhere, just simple clever stuff.

I'm told the R80 airheads are the most sound and reliable of the older BMWs.

Ok...a mate asked me about it a few months ago so I need to talk to him first.

The RT has the full touring fairing whereas the RS has a tucked fairing which is smaller, possibly doesn't have keyed gloveboxes, and the fairing is more sporty. Maybe the difference between a Honda Goldwing and a Honda ST?

As for money I honestly don't know. There was one on TM with much higher km for $3,500 in Dunedin but no idea if it sold. I paid $4000 20 years ago. Unreg dusty back-of-the-shed BMWs sell for $1000-2000 so far as I can tell whereas this is reg (on hold) and I'll get a WOF soon.

I better say (for those who don't know) I have a head injury from tipping the Ducati over so I struggle with some stuff. I've had great support from youse jokers on KB and this is as good a time as any to say thankyou once again.

Yes the bike is for sale. No not tomorrow but soon.

I bought one too when they came up for auction, with approx 40,000km on clock. $3600.
Sold it to a mate 35 tyres later with 200,000km on clock. Apparently it's still going strong.

With heaps of life left in your R80, it should be easy to sell.
