    Short ride North of Auckland

Not sure how many riders know this yet, but the section of road between Leigh & Wellsford is now pretty much all sealed. (Whangaripo Valley Rd)
Even Google Maps had it wrong for a while.
Three months ago there was just one 3km unsealed bit on the North side of Pakiri hill. This will be fine when it dries out a bit more - not too sure at the moment as my bike is off the road. Watch out for trucks through the valley, they don't seem to have heard of motorcycles.

If you go North from Matakana, you can T into Whangaripo Valley Rd. Neat ride with views & detours, but not sealed 3 months ago, and probably still a bit wet yet. Maybe someone can update on this?

There is a spur road North off Whangaripo Valley Rd, not far from Wellsford which can take you all the way to Mangawhai Heads on seal.
I love Highway 16, but this makes a neat addition, or alternative from route 1 off the main highway.

    Cheers , sootie

Waiteitei road is probably the one you are talking about (out of Wellsford)...Tomarata Valley road/School road is another option to get to Mangawhai from Wellsford.
Matakana Valley Road is not sealed on the northern side.

No, i have been unbelievably busy this year and the cold kiwi is low on the list atm. We are going to oz in 2 weeks, to do 2 weeks on a borrowed bike around nsw vic and tassie. Then fly to perth for a week to eat myself large!
    You going?
