Like D I 'live' for rallies -we have so many to choose from down here - and heaps of mates to meet up with at each one..

And then there's the one or half-day rides with mrs S.D to Central Otago, down the Catlins Scenic Route etc - or even a short burst down to Kaka Point for a coffee (or a handle beer on a hot day) if we haven't much time.

Rallys for me are the chance tpo expand the group of friends I have made since changing direction in my life.
The rides too and from are sometime a challenge, depending upon the rally location.
But that does not stop me just getting on my scooter and heading out in any direction, just for the enjoyment of the ride.
The old days of the heavy drinking tosser type rally that I remember has mellowed significantly over the years, and each year they are better.
Cant remember a rally in the past 7 years where there has been fight, or an arrest....bugger, that a whole heap of dangerous foot loose careless people gathered in one place....

Having said that, most permanent 30km/h speed limits that I have seen are bullshit when it comes to the Rule that you quoted.
it wasn't a temp 30kmh sign... I think thats why I looked a couple of times before it made sense, and naturally slowed cos I dont like uncertainty on the road. the cop could easily have covered the open road sign (which was about 10 metres in front of the 30) and put the 30kmh sign just before it then it would have been a 70 to 30 change, much more logical especially as the sign was on a corner and you couldnt see around it.

as for the "rallys are just piss drink times", yeap for some that is the case, just like the normal population going to a party... it is a party for feks sake! Corse people are gonna drink and playup, but it is contained and usually safe and no-one has to drive/ride home until the next day. I feel a damn sight safer at a bike rally than I would do at a non biker party of the same size.
And for those of us who have NEVER been breathalised it is good to get a guide of what are safe limits to drink and then be ok to drive/ride the next day. Sure you can drink nothing, but as far as I am concerned life is too short to say no to everything all the time.

Fair comment and point fully conceded, as I said my rally experience was 15+ yrs ago. So maybe I was still in the 'death throes' of the beer swilling ones. recent partner? HA!! Go to a rally or a weekend jaunt? Only if there's a Hotel or at minimum a Motel booked, camping 'not an option' for her!

    Damn tootin' right girl!

On my way to ANOTHER rally tomorrow - who knows who I'll meet - but I bet I'll be drinking with them and socialising with a bunch of like-minded mates from all over the country that I've met a dozens of other rallies.

Isn't that exactly the thing that starts many problems?

I've never had the chance to go to one, as it's always too far to ride my push bike over there.

Yah..they have to have something to compensate for the bad weather and gravel beaches.
