just it, innit. there is no control to compare it to. what i CAN compare it to, is say, 1000 years ago, when there was some kind of over-bearing-dictate-and-enforce kind of arrangement, crime? check. now, today. crime? check.

or you can take a shorter view on it. say the last 100 years, or even the last week.
what's fucken changed? people still saying "i want cops because i FEAR CRIME" chicken and egg shit or no? cops exist, have for (nearly) time immemorial, crime exists, has since the time of eve, innit?
people know that cops exist, people know that legislation exists that says they shouldn't drink-drive, hit kids, "speed" etc, but all this shit carrys on.
so. wtf the point in the cops?
can you provide links that show cops have improved anything, ever?

Course, I should just shut up. You know everything. Just like my 14 year old son.

so you conceed that speed is not dangerous, that you feel safe and competent to travel faster. yet you monetarily and forcibly penalise people who travel faster than your boss dictates. i see how that makes the community safer.

really, your 14 year old son has his eyes open to the BS that is your job? there is hope yet. probably his generation that will see your one hung. he might string you up first, just to prove the point....

I feel as if I've outlined my views on enforcement often enough. So have you. Nothing says we have to agree, and I like that.

I've given up arguing with my 14 year old too.

Devils advocate here. The lowered speed tolerance on long weekends hasn't changed a thing, will the powers that be take any note of that and change tack, (it started as a nautical term, stop saying " changing tact" cunts!)?

No they wont. But we're supposed to obey and believe they really do want the road toll down?

Serious question time. In the budget, is the revenue from traffic fines written as an income?

I think it is, and it implies that the government is banking on Kiwi's dying on our roads. Because..."Speed kills".

changing tact as in abbreviated changing tactics ok just being an silly, it is changing tack as in changing direction with regards to the wind in sailing (they don't even have motors )

You just have to obey, belief is optional

They are banking on Kiwis speeding as a continued revenue stream and don't have to do anything to actually stop it as they know it isn't related to real road safety but makes a good strawman.

Has that been going long enough to draw a conclusion?

Didn't we have like 0 deaths at easter or something?

The Govt drew the conclusion that lowering the tolerance had worked after that Easter you refer to, this just proves what everyone else warned. The tolerance is

I would suggest that it would be up to you to show that a society bereft of the social control mechanisms which you abhor would be better in any way than the admittedly imperfect society we have now.

What would be the outcome? I put it to you that people are fundamentally not that pleasant, and that within five years there would be a dystopian Mad Max style society (or perhaps something along the lines of Carpenter's "Escape from New York"): some sort of dog eat dog, mob rule, violent surreal dystopia. Not the anarcho-socialist paradise of your dreams. People are not nice. And if they can exploit, or steal or rape or kill without fear of consequence, I put it to you that that is what they will do.

    thoughts?

and yet at a shorter llong weekend just passed there were what, 8? What say you about "tolerance" now?

In fact, I think all vehicles should be electronically governed so that they cannot exceed 100kph, and that if you do, satellites armed with lasers should be programmed to shoot you from orbit.
