The top Japanese fighter pilots in WWII seemed very keen on Kawasaki engines. Most of the Zero engines were made by Mitsubishi, but a few were turned out by Kawasaki (whose major war efforts were elsewhere). The story around the Zero pilots was that if you got jumped by a US Corsair (the Whispering Death was their nickname) a Kawaski engine would bring you home even when it was riddled with 0.5 calibre machine gun bullets! The pilots would fight over the few of these engines available apparently. I don't think any of them had ever heard the name Honda at that time! FYI
