    mmm, Im rossi,
I am racing in the formula one competition,
I take a small fall and slide across the shingle pit
My helmet hits the ground several times during this at a good speed.
I get up pick up my race bike, and rejoin the race
    OH SHIT!!
Must stop in the pits and get a new helmet, this one is now unsafe to use at speeds in excess of 200KPH I cannot race anymore....

    Really????
A 40cm fall that "chips" the paint and all you experts ("X" being the unknown factor, "Spert" being a drip under pressure)
Are shouting, replace replace replace, life risk, dangerous, totally fucked.....

How many people who race bikes have been using the same helmet for many ,many races including one where they kissed the road.
Did they under duress from scrutineers change the helmet immediately, just because of a small scratch, chip or graze?
es If the outer skin is cracked, and the inner lining crushed, then replacement is needed immediately.

Well, thats my view on this matter,
Am I entitiled to this? or will I get flamed because I are opposite to the majority here.

Bugger I better replace my helmet, it has about 30 chips the same as this all around the back of it, Came from the brass dome buttons on my shoulder epaulets coming undone and hitting it, probably with more force than this small drop. Amazing really.
To be old and wise, first you must be young and stupid.

In my experience, race helmets have a limited life span, or expiry date. Scrutineers tell you to replace them. If you have a decent sized crash, where you are injured, race officials can and do take the helmet off you. You may get it back, minus the straps which they cut off.

Luckily for me so far, (fingers crossed) I haven't dropped my helmet and I don't want to.... I have an expensive one.

I saw a guy yesterday, riding his cruiser in t-shirt, shorts, no gloves with a helmet that had dents all over it...
