Classic shocks

I'm after some advice. I am doing a bit of a restoration on my Honda CB500 Four, and I need new shocks. I had heard good things about Hagon shocks, but they don't make any that suit my bike, so I don't know what to go for. What I want is a set that will make my bike handle better than new, and look pretty. Handling is more important than looks. I know it'll never handle like a modern bike but it should be able to go over rough roads at a reasonable pace with a bit of composure. Currently the bike wallows in corners and bottoms out on basically any tiny bump, and if you hit a bump in a corner you end up pogo-ing all the way around. And if you want to get even a bit of pace on, you better hold on tight!

Any advice/ reccomendations?

So far I called Cycletreads and they have 2 options - no name brand with no warranty $158, or YSS for $299. I've never heard of YSS, are they any good?

Any other brands/ shops I should call?

YSS are made in Thailand and have their R&D guys in Holland.
I think there is a WP connection somewhere.

I bought YSS shocks for my XT500 and they're pretty good.

Get hold of Hagon directly or talk to the NZ importer. Bet they can get something together pretty easy.

Also talk to Falcon shocks in the UK maybe. They do some good stuff too, that would not look out of place on a 70's bike.

Ring the guys at EconoHonda and talk with Malcom. I couldnt replace my CB750 shocks and got Hagon ones from them and they are all good. he may have or be able to suggest possibilities for you

Thanks for the quick replies! I have emailed Falcon, Hagon and Malcolm at Econohonda, hopefully I'll be able to make a good decision based on whatever info they give back.

The pattern parts from wemoto look great and the price is right, so I may go for them if the others come back with nothing. I was hoping to upgrade though, so it would be a bit of a shame.

Second the Ikons,,their made for bikes of that era and have worked "and lasted" very well on both bikes I've had them on,,,one being my current ride.

I've had Hagons on one bike and they were ok for about 10,000km then run out of dampening and became pogo sticks.

Don't know about the others.

I run a set of Ikons on my Norton and BMW , same as the dial a rides and you can rebuild them.
Cycletreads are the agent, you can deal with Ikon direct but there is not much in it price wise.
Make sure you select springs to suit your weight as nothing worse than oversprung suspension.
Or you could go Ohlins....apparently they are ok....

Do you mean you have a brand new set for sale? Cycletreads mentioned these but said they had none in the country and it would take anywhere from 4-6 months to get some in! PM with details if you have them for sale, after looking at the website I'd say these would be the best suited to me and my bike. Price could be an issue but I think availability and quality could sway me.

supplier referred me back to Cycletreads.....I remember the days before credit cards and the internet when you were reamed by all wholesalers

and retailers and their cozy cartels.....well those days are gone.

Yep. Particularly with something as specialized as old motorbikes. ALL the bits come from the specialist suppliers overseas. Generally within a week and with excellent service. I'm looking at you David Silver Spares, and CMNSL. Of course I always try Malcolm at Econohonda first, but DSS for new and repop stuff? can't go wrong. Want some HM300 pipes for your 750 K0 resto? they gottem. Bring money, but thats all.
