Insurance - best bang for my buck?

I'm looking at buying a 650cc bike from trademe and am wanting to get full insurance.

I'm a 19 y/o male so I'm aware it's not going to be cheap

My question is, should I do it through my local bike shop, bank, insurance company.. etc?



any wisdom greatly appreciated.

+1 Dave Hewer does a very good job - got me Star Insurance here in AKL, they were quick and efficient, and paid out what I asked for.

Insurances are a big part of my working life, I've never used brokers because I've always been able to find a better deal myself through simply picking up the phone! 4 weeks ago I bought a 2007 Honda Transalp 650, my first big bike. I'm 28, I have insured my 250 with N.A.C for two years and had one claim for an at fault collision and would recommend them to anyone, so bought bike.. called N.A.C, quote was $630 p/a, uncool I thought, called around.. quotes from Star Insurance and a couple others. Called Kiwibike (a broker) not expecting much, quote came to $335 for the year through Protecta, so expecting a price increase by quoting through the broker I went to the Protecta website and did a quote for myself to see what the price would be and it was the same!

So.. Kiwibike give them a call, nice to deal with on the phone, and I know a guy who had a strange claim while insured with Kiwibike and the insurer wasn't going to pay, the guy told me Dave from Kiwi bike gave the company a push and it ended up getting paid out. Great stuff!

I just renewed a policy with Kiwibike after doing a little shopping around. I went back to them for the fact that they make it so damn easy, I hate filling out forms. I've had some demerit points since I last took out a policy with them & the computer wanted to raise my premium & excess but Donna made a quick call to the insurer & it was all sorted. I'm yet to have to make a claim with them & hope I never will.
