Learners licence dispensations

Hi all,

I've just got my learners and purchased a bike to commute to work. That's about to make my life a whole lot easier, since I work in the Auckland CBD and parking a car was a nightmare. But since I work evening shifts and finish work at 11, I'm effectively going to be breaking my licence conditions every night I drive home. That doesn't worry me that much, but I imagine it wouldn't be hard to rack up a few fines and demerits if I'm doing it every worknight, every week.

Does anyone know if you can get a dispensation to use your bike after hours in special circumstances? Something like between the hours of 11 and 11.30 and only on worknights? Anyone had experience with this? Cheers.

You can apply, but the NZTA virtually never ever ever provide an exemption.

Look for form DL4 on their website. If you have any convictions at all, or there is any type of public transport forget it.

you can beg the court for whatever. they'll probably give it to you. it costs lots.

were i you, i'd rely on cops' discretion. it'd have to be a slow day and cunty cop (most in auckland are.. though..) to get done for it if you weren't doing sommat naughty anyhow.

Agree with u RM I was given dispensation during my restricted to ride a Honda 750 Shadow, due to my hight just presented my evidence - photos on a 250 and it was granted but with a requirement I sat my full as soon as I was able to.

It is not the size of the bike that is the issue ... but the curfew hours he has to obey.

realise that but the first few posters said they didn't grant exemptions as I was also told on here, but in fact they were very helpful, and I'm sure if the right information was presented as I did, he would at least have a chance.

The policy is in place for exemptions ... THEY may not have got one. And it may (as they say) be dependant on public transport availability ...

It can't hurt to apply anyway ...

But if the OP "loses the L plate (on the way home) and behaves himself ... he should be ok.

You can apply for an exemption on any restriction of licence conditions. Whether you get it is another story. As said, you're after form DL4. Lodging a form costs $22.20 I think (several years ago now).

Back it up with as much proof and data as possible. Letter from your employer, alternative transport options etc. If there is suitable public transport, then your chances of obtaining are minimal. If you live where there is no public transport or something, then it becomes more likely.

Because you are only on your learners you will be pretty lucky if they grant you an exemption but it is definately worth a try.
If they do say no, just lose the "L" plate on your way home and make sure you stick to all the rules. Just be careful on thursday, friday, saturday nights, there will be more cops out and about then.
By the way, you will never know until you try!
