My first late model 1000cc bike ride

    Hey everyone,

Ive finally done it (with the help of Loosebruce) and ridden a K3 GSX-R1000.... Pretty much totally and utterly speechless.... I hopped on to it at Motohaus, the first thing i noticed was that the position is dedicated but not cramped, then i noticed the huge amount of low down and midrange torque (the torque puts all v-twins to shame).

I managed to score this bike for a couple of days, so didnt get to push it that hard at all. The handling is beautiful, razor sharp with pinpoint accuracy. I compare the handling to that of my K5 GSX-R600. The brakes were phenomenal hauling up the bike very quickly. The power is just mindblowing, its like stepping up from a 250cc onto a 600cc with a very smooth power delivery. The throttle isnt very twitchy at all which surprised me with that much power. Wheelies non stop in first and second gear, and even with full weight on the tank, it will wheelie in second on a small crest under full power.

There is some down sides though, and that is it is a very hard bike to ride legally. Keeping the bike at 60kmh is very hard, as the slightest move of the throttle results in the speed upping to 65+kmh and the bike is almost stalling in 3rd gear at 50kmh.

So to sum it up, if you want the ultimate race bike/ track bike get a gixxer thousand. If you want to do stupid stuff get a gixxer thousand. If you want wank factor get a gixxer thousand. If you want a versitle bike, that you can ride normally and go hard when you want to get a gixxer 600...

WTF? You are trying to tell us all that a 4 cylinder 1000 puts out more low down & mid range torque than a big V-Twin?? Best you read the spec sheets, or even better, go for a ride on a big V-Twin.That will soon change your mind!!!

Sure the Busa has sheer grunt, so does my Blackbird, and they both weigh in round 230kg...but these litre bikes are a different kettle of fish because they only weigh in at a mere 170kgs and have just as much HP to go - quite an eye opener to ride in comparison to the heavier machines!!

Well, I have to disagree, the one (distasteful) time I rode a Harley road king,
compared to the Bandit,I thought it felt like a 400 with something wrong with the crank

Even better. I'll take on any 1000cc V-twin in a 100kph top gear roll race on on my Gixxer 1K.

Before you ask, I've experimented wit this before and always kicked arse. I can hoist the front wheel in first gear, at 3000rpm, off the throttle. Show me a twin that'll do that on standard gearing.

I was wondering about that. Too much power for me to be an everyday bike.

Gixxer thou's make an excellent everyday bike, i do close to 600 k's a week. They can be relaxing and comfortable to ride and you don't have to rev them hard. As for to much power.....self control is a wonderfull thing

You might want to read that fact spec sheet. I think when you compare say a 1000 vtwin with the GSXR 1000, you might get a surprise.

IF YOU REALLY PUSH IT HARD YOULL NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE , IF YOUR DOING SCENIC DRIVE OR PIHA ROAD FOR INSTANCE AND RACING THEM BACK TO BACK REAL HARD YOULL NOTICE ON CONSECUTIVE CORNERS WITH EQUAL RIDERS THE 1000 WILL RUN WIDE SO YOU END UP BACKING OFF THE THROTTLE TO TIGHTEN
THE SECOND AND THIRD CORNER WHILE THE 600 IS STILL NAILED HITTING THE APEXES ALL THE WAY THATS THE 600 ADVANTAGE

I've only ridden one V-Twin, a VFR800, and I reckon all that extra noise and vibration they make gives a false impression about their power. I'd like to ride the SV1000, TL1000R, VTR1000SP to make my own personal comparison & conclusion.

Sounds like the fours are reputably faster by the responses you've had to your comment, how many late model thous have you ever ridden Dave?
