Tokomaru Bay has 4 brand new motel units built onto the local pub ...Te Puka Tavern...very good quality and right next to the water.
Large motel complex at Hicks bay...Hicks Bay Motel Lodge.
Te Puia Springs Hotel but its very basic and the fuel station there closed earlier this year.
Te Kaha Hotel has a large under ground garage that you could probably get use of if worried about security. It easily parked up our group of 80 bikes.
I stayed at all 4 places in April this year and would rate Te Puka Tavern as the pick for quality.
cheers for all the help guys lookin forward to riding the cape !
Krayy & I did the Cape over Auckland Anniversary weekend. Stayed at Te Araroa holiday park which set us up well for the next mornings ride south. It was ok but fairly expensive. Got up at sparrow fart & rode out to the lighthouse for the sunrise. Awesome ride, but LOTS of wandering stock, so don't ride at night if you can help it.
No gravel on the main rode, approx 10km of hard pack each way from Te Araroa to the Cape itself.

OK let me qualify my statement, just to remove the mystery. I ride one-up mostly, light luggage only, with a bike regularly serviced and all that, I have no problem running to around 200 miles/320 kms before reserve is needed on the jaunt around East Cape. On days when I fuel in the morning before lift-off, bike on centrestand at Pak'N'Save Gisborne fuel stop, trickle it to the brim and cruise at my relaxed pace and I don't even need reserve to get to the BP in Opotiki![]()
