So long as 660cc bike are allowed, it's under the 150kw/tonne limit. If it isn't on the LAMS list you could submit it and get it added.

Yes. It's on the list. Why don't you people EVER visit the website that has the list of approved bikes? Someone went to a lot of trouble to put it up.

The Yamaha XT660r and the XTZ660 are, so I would think the 2008 XT660X would be.

It is not on the list that I can see. Only the XT660 is listed. As far as I am aware, different models (xt660x) are not included in a global model code, unless it says along side in the LAM "(all variants)" as some other listings do.

Different sub-models of bikes need to be approved separately as they may have substantially different power-to-weight (this is the case particularly with restricted variants that are created to get into LAM while they unrestricted models don't).

There's no reason it can't be added, but somebody has to go to the trouble of filling out the form and convincing the NZTA that the xt660x is compliant.

Now, would a member of the constabulary give you a ticket for riding an XT660x when only an XT660 is listed? Who knows. Depends what sort of day they are having and how observant they are I expect. The implementation of LAM is new, and more than a bit slack and open to interpretation IMHO. Hopefully it will get clearer as time goes on.

Edit to add: perhaps one of our esteemed local kiwibiker boys in blue could mention if they have had any guidance from above about how to interpret LAM compliance?

The XT660R and XT660X are fat, heavy, and underpowered. No cop is going to question the difference between an XT660 and an XT660R/X.

If it needs paperwork, do it. I doubt it does.

My original point still stands. There is SOO much speculation about what is and isn't allowed and the regs are available to review and there are people you can contact for clarification who have the power to rule one way or the other. Avoid Internet forum speculation or guesswork. The Police are NOT the final arbiters of what is valid or not, LTNZ is. Ask. The.People.With.The.Power.
