Free places to ride offroad, central North Island?

    Hey guys,
I recently moved up to taupo from Queenstown.
In and around Queenstown you had atleast 4 option for offroad riding for free on doc and other land.

Now i have found one spot near taupo on the way to Napier in Rangitaiki with nice bush tracks.

i was wondering if an of you guys know of any other places near Taupo or central north island like this where you can ride at own leisure.

    Cheers
    Nick

In season the 42 Traverse towards national park is open to Motor bikes etc - has a pub to have a beer at the Owhango end too.

I have moved up from Te Anau to Rangitaiki, and there is a heap of track out behind the pub and beyond, have you been right out the back?

I use to ride out at the Pureroas (western bays way) 5+ years ago and there use to be good tracks out there if you know where they are, I haven't been back to check if they are still there. Also there use to be some good tracks around rainbow mountain, around kerosene creek from memory.

Problem is I have 10,000Ha of farm land to play on so I don't go off farm much. I also have a track heading off into the bush on the boundary and I have to go explore that one day too.

    Try Pureora Forest park Park

Head along Poihipi Rd and turn right at Tihoi Rd as though you are going to Whakamaru. Take a left at Arataki Rd and follow it to the end. There is a swing bridge there

Come back along Arataki Rd a couple of hundred meteers and you'll find a track leading down to the river. The river is fordable here with a good solid base. I used to do this many times on a PE 250 back in the mid 1980s. Once in the forest park there are tracks every where.
    Time to ride
