    Good second bike

On my way to probably a 600 sports or tourer, I am interested in what kind of second bike would be a good step-up from my current CBR 250.

I have had the Suzuki SV650 mentioned to me by a couple of riders and I think it looks quite reasonable. I was wondering if there are similar bikes (a bit older and cheaper maybe) that could be recommended?

    Cheers

friend of mine stepped up from a suzuki gsx250 and was tossing up between a suzuki sz650 and a yamaha r6 , rode both for a day , ended up with the yamaha , yamaha is definantly the better looking , better performing overall better bike , but really just choose something that YOU want!

I went from a CBR250 to the 636. Rode the R6 and CBR600RR as well as the 636. All good bikes, but only one came in orange. All around the same price range, along with the GSXR600 and Daytona 650.. The latter two I didn't get to ride, but wouldn't mind having a go on all of them again, now I'm used to the 636.. But I'm in for the sporty style where as the SV is a bit more 'toury' than sporty, altho still a top bike

May be look at another angle to see if it helps - money.. look at what budget you have, then see what bikes are in that range. Might bring up some bikes you hadn't thought of......

After all the talk about the Hyosung's, maybe a second hand one of those if they have been around long enuf to be second hand. GT650S in particular. Similar to the SV if that is the style you like. Do a K.B search for Hyosung to view threads.

Maybe I should narrow it down a bit more. The Hyosung is pretty much what I'm looking for but it's too new and will be too expensive. What models in the 90's from SuKaHoYa would be similar to the Suzuki SV650/Hyosung GT650. Probably looking for something around $6000 or lower.

    Cheers

might be able to score a Gen1 SV650 for that price but they go quick.....(as in sells fast)

wait till u get your full license...and then take them out... or actualy better still.... find a VTR250 now and go for a ride.... its a good time to decide if u want to go down the VTwin or Multi(4) route.

You may need to widen your cc parameters if price is really important. My 'L' model 1100 is much bigger, but was very reasonable. The oilcooled motors are/were one of the best around too.
Edit: perhaps not a good idea to make that big a jump as a 'newish' rider
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

For a start, to see what's available, go on bikepoint (www.bikepoint.co.nz) and type in your criteria with respect to price, cc rating, etc. When you've got a list to start with you can narrow it down and take a look at a few. If nothing else, it'll give you some idea of "how much bang you get for your buck", then you can have a look on TradeMe, at your local dealers, in trader magazines, etc.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

Thanks Viffer. This approach threw up some very interesting bikes. Being able to limit on CC rating is cool.
