Buying and getting a bike shipped from Christchurch to Auckland?

Are there any members that can go and have a look at a bike in Christchurch for me?

I live in Auckland and there is a honda VFR400 I am considering.

Also when purchased it needs to get to auckland and I have be quoted $600 transport costs.

Any ideas on a freight company?

tis a nice way to see a differnet part of the country for a change.

i've got an empty van coming from chch to wellington next weekend then you could arrange to fly to wellington and ride it back or pay a commercial option from welly to ak.

Give Dennis at New Zealand motorcycle movers a call 0800 200 900 I got a bike from Chch about 3months ago and it cost $350 delivered and it's a door to door service. Highly recommend. As for someone checking it out I was really lucky there was a guy on here that was willing to check it out for me, you will just have to ask around I guess.

I had a good run with biketranz but the last wasnt very quick getting a bike with the east coast to welly as they collected it then took it back to Auckland before bringing it South. Took a few weeks to get it. Ask for a quote and the time frame also perhaps.

Last bike I bought I did this. Paid in cash once I'd actually seen and ridden the bike.
Then the fantastic first few hundred kms ride home
Cost about the same or less than the cheapest freight price in this thread so far.

We move heaps of bikes at Mainfreight but I dont recommend it unless you get it crated ie: get a used crate from a bike shop.

I would not recommend the hitching side of things. Last time I tried hitching from the ferry I walked from the ferry to Korimiko before I got a ride!

Last time I hitched down from the ferry ... I roamed the vehicle deck asking for a lift from the truckies ... (got one before the ship docked)

Have a think about it before shipping.

Will cost you probably $500-$600 to get it shipped. OR.
Get a cheap flight, probably get a cheapy for Under $80 if you fly when its cheapest
Google maps says its 337km from chch to picton, and 635km from welly to orc-land. 972km should be do-able on $200 of gas or less easily.
Ferry plus bike is what, $100?
Cheap accom in Picton or wellington for one night (but I bet youd find a KB member to put you up) $50
add $70 or so for food and incidentals

so, pay $5-600 and wait a week for your bike to arrive, OR.

pay $450 (or less with free accom and sedate riding)
enjoy a two day break off work, and take the chance to familiarise yourself with your new bike, and ride some great roads.

I know which I would be doing, Ive never had a bike shipped to me!!!

    Thanks for the advice.

I don't know how well the bike would run, that is why I am asking for it to be checked out.

Shipping advice has been great. I will follow up some places on Monday.

    Patrick.
