Talking Time to buy a bike!

Amazing news! Just got a personal loan approved to buy a bike and some riding gear!
So now I need some pointers on what to look for when looking at used bikes and gear. (New helmet in order just to be safe). I am good with cars but have very little experience with bikes.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. (Will also be looking for a mentor once I have the new machine if there is anyone in the Cambridge/Hamilton area. Or suggestions of any instructors...)
Who am I? Why am I here?
    Forget the questions

Yip come for a ride with us. We even have a MASSIVE carpark at our disposal to have a play in without worrying about anything. It's a really good group for getting some confidence in riding and sorting some things out since we have people that have been riding for YEARS and those that started off recently.

Regarding the helmet...boy, have I got a deal for you What size head are you? It really is like new. I value my head to much to sell anyone else crap.

This is who you want to talk to regarding some knowledge and this is where we talk crap. If Murray can't help ya, he'll put you onto some that can. Hell, even post your questions on the thread and everyone will help

Thnks so much for your help! I have left a message for Murray so I am sure I will hear from him at some point.
Definately keen to get to a carpark for some serious practice before spending too much time on the road, I have a healthy respect for my level of experience...
Took a look at your helmet but I'm about a 58cm, (lots of brains ) thats as long as bike helmets and horse helmets are measured the same way...
Going into Hamilton tomorrow to take a look at the bike shops to see what they have in the way of both bikes and gear. Where are the best places to look?

Boyds have the biggest range of clothing and hemets, although Ham Honda are also worth a look.

Take a look at both their websites.

Also if you are buying several items ask for a discount

Road & sport if you're into chaps, lol. R&S plus Hamilton motorcycle centre are right next to Boyds so would pay to check them all out.

Yeah, I know, but it's great repayment terms and I would rather that than get finance on a bike

Sorry mate, should have specified, I'm still on my learners
Really just wanted to know what to look out for in regards to the condition of bikes... Obviously I won't want to buy anything that is pouring smoke out the exhaust, or anything with a warn sproket and loose chain...
