Hi everyone,
You may have heard by now that ALL RESTRICTED LICENCE HOLDERS, from the 1st October, regardless of age, will now spend 18 months on their Restricted Licence. You will no longer be allowed to use the DDC or Street talk to shorten your time on Restricted Licence.
New Basic Handling starting on November 1st.
Lams starting on October 1st.

Does this apply to those already in the system, that is , on their restricted or learners now,
or only to those who start the journey after the 1st oct.
Clarification of the law in this areas , not just hearsay, guess work, or general interpretation.
What does the Law say in regards to this,
And if it is written in the law, can a link to an official document, or website containing such laws.

Second this question. I'll be on my R next week. Does this mean I'll be able to take my full in December as I'm over 25 with a DDC, or am I stuck with the full restricted period? Is the cutoff those who get their R plates AFTER October first, or apply to ANYONE on an R plate?

Good information there, but nothing specific to those already started under the current law,
I can only read that these new laws apply to persons applying for a license after the 1Oct,

If you go to this link: http://www.nzta.govt.nz/licence/gett...cles/time.html theres a reference at the bottom to getting an exemption if you have already done an approved course - my reading of it is that you wont get an exemption unless you've held your restricted for 12months already........

I'm a bit gutted about this change, not sure if it was communicated earlier or not. Guess it will stop people being able to do learners + 3 months to full (if over 25) and then jumping on an R1 after 9 months riding experience. Oh well, my Hornet treats me well and is more bike than I can handle for now anyway

the information that they sent out to the BHS Instructors didn't make this crystal clear. MY previous understanding from the meetings was the it would be 18 months on Retricted, and the only way to reduce would be to do the Competency Based Training Assessment. However, this programme has n't been fully formulated yet, so I wasn't expecting the 18 months on REstricted, until there is a definite way to reduce the time to 12 months.
Exemption request for those on Restricted come 1st October?
Which is how they got around the raise in driving age.

I hope they introduce a way to reduce your restricted license time to 12 months.
I'd rather get an unrestricted 600cc at the end of 2013 than in the middle of 2014.

Or they allow exemptions for people already part way through the process. Bit of a bummer thinking Im going to get my full in November only to find out wouldn't be able to get it until bloody march in 2014.

I am hearing you on that one!!!!! Plenty of my students will be in the same boat. Some had already been counting down the days to Full licence test, and now it may well end up being in 2014... I hope they will allow people to get exemptions.
But if it is like the exemptions for the age change, in order to be granted the exemption, you had to apply, pay the $27, and also not had any tickets, crashes, fines etc etc.

Oh well, if that's the requirements for an exemption, , then 2014 will be what I will have to wait for, bugger.
30+ years riding, finally get my restricted, god, cant asses how many miles I have ridden on all sizes of bikes.
But, Having had speeding tickets, wrong class of license tickets, and fines, then I guess the LB of flesh demanded just continues.
Oh well, If life throws you a curve, just lean into it harden and survive.

Thats a pain in the ass. Although I suppose if the time I have been on my learners is anything to go by, I probably would not have gone for my full in 3/6 months anyway. At least we have LAMs now, so theres abit more choice for bikes to ride 'legally'.
Does anyone know if you done the defenive driving course for your car, was it(under the old law) still valid for the motorbike ? Was nearly 10 years ago though...
Nerves are already building up for restricted test next week. :S
