While we are on the subject of LAMS legal, while I was still in the frame of mind of getting a cruiser and was in at the shops having a sit on a few different bikes, one of the sales guys got me onto a Honda Shadow (750cc for any newbies like me ). Now, said sales guy, wants to get me up at the track to have a ride on said very much LAMS Illegal bike and is very sure that I should purchase this bike. He knows I only have my learners and haven't ridden in over 4 years. He was giving me all kinds of reasons such as he wouldn't sell it to me if I didn't seem sensible...
Is it even legal for a sales guy to sell non LAMS bikes to a learner?
Who am I? Why am I here?
    Forget the questions

He can sell you anything he wants

I was just browsing through the list and the fastest bike you can buy is the ZZR400.
    My ZX6/ZZR is a 400... with a 600 motor (bolt in job)
There we go, 100hp LAMS bike, nobody needs to know

    No. Of course not.

But look, there's a Buell 400CR going for a very reasonable price: http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/moto...-524109068.htm

So basically, anyone can sell me anything / I could buy anything? Nobody needs to know type thing...?

Thats a little odd. You would think with them cracking down on learners etc that there would be some rules...

Nice bike! I will take three!

There's no law against owning the bike

You can possibly pick up a CBR250R cheaper than that especially second hand. A few years ago I owned a CBF 250 (less powerful) and I went to wellington (from Hamilton) and back again + many more long distance trips. The only disadvantage was that you really have to pick your overtaking points but with the CBR that should be less of an issue for you.

Don't let anyone tell you you need a large displacement bike for long distance 250s are fine. Infact I found my CBF more comfy than my sv650 long distance.
However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results.

Not illegal to own, but illegal to operate purely because it's outside your licence conditions.

No, the salesman shouldn't be recommending stuff you shouldn't be buying, but he's a salesman...

If you want a nice looking bike that'll go forever and be extremely nice to you and your wallet, go buy that gs500f. It's the newest of the bunch, the bike has been around since the late 80s without any changes aside from them slapping the fairings on it back in 07 or summat. It won't depreciate much and it'll take you wherever you want to go.

Buying anything else is just plain silly unless you feel like you want a motard/dual sport.

When you learn to ride a sports bike, you won't have issues with your back. It's all about positioning on a sports bike. To be honest, i think you would actually like the Ninja. I have a few friends that have them and absolutely love them.

Let us all know what you finally decide on, would be interesting.
Personally i would stare clear of those Korean tredleys and go buy a 2nd hand something that is more desirable.

Did quote the words *sorely under equipped* !

Ridden the scorp, as i bought one for the Mrs as a learners a few years back, (still got it as it is a good training bike for my kids and their mates) but once highway travel comes into the equation, it is sorely under equipped ! Seen some ugly situations while following her on long trips where a little more power would have alleviated any danger !
At 80-90 k it has nothing left re power to get you out of trouble and the front suspension is what i'd call extremely sad !

But of course each to his/her own
A girlfriend once asked " Why is it you seem to prefer to race, than spend time with me ?"
The answer was simple ! "I'll prolly get bored with racing too, once i've nailed it !"

    Bowls can wait !

I do really like the GS500F, the original one that I found and loved has been sold though and the only other one on TM is in Christchurch
